Think I'm going to attempt a rod build for a winter project - likely a 4 or 5 wt graphite. Any seasoned builders here who's brains I can pick? Right now I'm leaning toward a tfo blank, but I'm definitely open to other recommendations.

Enjoy building your rod. I find it very enjoyable fishing with rods I've put together - a bit of extra pride in your equipment.
I've built 2 Pacific Bay blanksly and have been happy, and one St Croix blank that I also like, so I can't comment on the TFO blanks. I have a couple of TFO rods I like though, so I imagine it will be good.
Good luck and enjoy!

Check the Batson rod building website. Their Rainshadow blanks are very popular. Good quality and good price. They sell very high quality components and kits as well as the tools. You might have to go through one of their Dealers though. These blanks are very popular on the West Coast for rod builders.

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to try to put together an ultralight, fast 4 wt. Will try to piece together the lightest components I can find.

What I did to get my toe wet in rod building was to buy a kit from Cabela's and the minimum accesories (Specific tools, a better book than come with the kit and rod turner/dryer).
What I got was a winter project, a 2wt rod that works perfectly and a boutique wt rod for $60~$80. I also still have the books tools and dryer if I want to make another rod.
I have extra rod build materials to repair my rods and better knowledge to do it better.
I also found out that rod building doesn't do it for me like tying but for very little cost and I am still the richer for it.
Hope this helps.

I built a light (3wt) Pacific Bay rod a couple of years ago... I just use it for small mountain streams. Turned out great.
However, this year I have been fishing my 6wt TFO BVK rod quite a bit... It's an awesome rod, so I would definitely look into TFO blanks. Typically TFO rods are pretty fast action, so you should consider that.

Matches my flailing casting style pretty well I ordered a Sevier Tiger Eye blank in a 4/5 wt to practice on. Reviews on their blanks seem very positive and they're inexpensive, so no great loss if it happens to go horribly wrong. It'll end up being a trout stream rod for my son. If all goes well with that one I'll try out a BVK blank for myself.

Cool.
I just picked up an 8wt BVK as well. I found that the 6wt was a really good fish-fighting rod (probably comes with the fast action). So I got the 8wt to try out on the Red. I feel like I should be going to a 10wt to fight some of those bigger warm water fish (especially this spring when the water was so high), but I'm going to see if I can get away with the 8wt BVK.

Finished up with my first build. Kept it very plain and simple for a first attempt. Not the most aesthetically pleasing rod I've seen, but it looks ok and casts quite well. This one will be going to my son in BC to play with on his local trout streams. The next one will be for me

Looking for a little help on a piece I need for my current rod build. I'm looking for a size 4 tip top. Hate to have to order from the States and pay all the shipping. If any one can hook me up, I'd appreciate it. Obviously, I'm willing to cover any costs involved and am willing to drive into the city to pick it up. Hoping to get out next weekend to test this rod out.
