My schedule only allowed me to get out this morning (Friday) but the weather forecast almost kept me in bed. Drizzle and +5C: enough to keep one's head firmly on one's pillow.
But I did rise early and hit the water at about 5:45, heavy long johns under the waders, and my stoutest woolen cap on top. Evidently the forecast kept everyone else in bed as, for the next two hours, I was the only person on the water: no boats, no shore anglers.
I didn't see a ton of fish breaking the surface, but it only took a couple of casts to see that the river was still full of fish.
Owing to a couple of days of north wind, the river was high and I couldn't get out to the east reef. I fished further downstream and, given that the river was backed up, currents were quite tame. It made for great conditions to hit the drum but not so much for the cats. As the morning progressed, there were cats breaking further out in the river, beyond effective fishing distance, for me anyhow.
I ended up with two fair-hooked cats and a whole bunch of drum, including a pb 30" fish. That fish alone made it worth getting out of bed! Most hit my trailer fly, a fl. yellow San Juan worm. I have not had a year where I have caught so many big drum.
I never thought I'd say this about Lockport, but it has actually been a little lonely out there on the morning beat! I recommend it highly, especially for those who like to avoid the crowds....TIM

Wow, 30" is a huge Drum! It's funny, I had a hard time catching the big ones last weekend.
Must be that San Juan worm. How big of a worm are you tying?

I tie it on a #6 heavy scud hook, with some lead wrap.
BTW, I'm feeling a liitle guilty about the "30" drum" claim. Time to fess up. It was a big fish and I laid it across my rod, making a note of where the tail ended. After releasing the fish, I ran the tape to where I remembered the tail ending (no markings, however), and it came out at 30". BUT, was it accurate?! That fish was easily 28", but did it hit the magic 30"? I guess I'll never know for sure! ...TIM

The 30"er is good enough for me. I've been there before... Anytime I get one like that, I just think to myself whether I thought my guess was most likely an underestimate, or an overestimate.
Anyways, point was there are big drum out there, and I've got some SJWs ready to go Thursday!
