Well I got out yesterday on the river around 3pm. Took me about 15 minutes to get into the fish but once I did, the action didn't slow down until I took my fly out of the water. I lost track of how many fish I touched but it was close to 50. Mostly drum....I mean A LOT of drum. I did manage to get some decent ones though. My biggest was a personal best 27" which I measured against my rod blank on shore. It went from where the cork starts past the first stripping guide by 4-inches! Not an overly deep fish but it was long and a clean looking fish. I also got a pretty decent cat early in the day and another couple later in the day. Steven, Stephen, and Joel showed up and the four of us created a firing line. lol. We had several triple headers, and I think we did have a quadruple header for a second. I lost count on how many doubles we had. It was a good night. =) Steven with a kitty and a broken 8wt. Nick

Man that drum picture is deceiving. That's a 10'6" surf casting 9-weight and a 9/10 Okuma SLV reel. lol. Here's a better pic for comparison.

Well done guys.
I was out this evening. Loads of drum - quit counting after a while. One carp ldr'd, but no cats.
Caught a 24" drum on my second cast and then only the carp and one other drum for the next hour.
I finally got dialled in and was catching a drum on every other cast after that, including a 26" pb.
I'll be back...

Couldn't resist - went back out tonight. Crazy number of drum again. Another pb - 27". Quit measuring after my fourth 24+". Finally got a couple cats too. One 31" and a 32". Quick snap of the 31:

Think you're gonna need a bigger net next time! You beat me to that one! I was also wondering what that weenie little net was for. It is a pretty one.

I'll have to bring my net sometime. lol. I've been able to beach em, hand bomb em, or have someone there to give me a hand.

LOL, yeah, the net was basically used to suggest to the fish which way to go for the pic. I discovered trying to photograph an uncooperative 30" catfish, solo, can be kind of tricky. Didn't even try with the second one.
I think I need a bigger rod too. That's my heaviest (7 wt,) and it was kind of outgunned by a couple of fish last night.

For something that big, wouldn't a cradle be more appropriate? Though i'd be better with a partner to help you out.

I'm sure it would. I was only using it to block him from taking off before I got the picture. I didn't actually net him in it.

3rd time out this week...still catching tons of drum. Was annoyed with the North wind and having to 'chuck and duck' all the time so I started casting with the left arm...very helpful to be able to use either arm Also got a PB drum at 27" Got a couple cats too...

Steve and Nick...I caught that same drum with that weird tumor thing on its forehead that both of you landed on Tuesday.

Got out this afternoon after my first aid course. Got the usual drum just below the locks and decided to try the floodway outlet where it meets the main channel. I noticed a few pale evening duns popping and a quick survey of the rocks showed lots of mayfly nymphs! I tied on a size 14 yellow/tan hare's ear and hung it under an indicator. I was working the seam at the floodway outlet and finally got a take after about 45 minutes. I was casting out and slowly hand-twisting the rig back to me. After a great battle I beached a really solid carp! She absolutely inhaled the fly! I had to dig it out with forceps. I put a tape on her and she measured 35"! A personal best for me! No other carp were fair hooked unfortunately, just a couple drum on the nymph. I switched back to a clouser and got a few goldeye and a few more drum. I foul hooked one cat at the end of the night. Great fight and I thought it was fair hooked until I landed it. Right in the pectoral fin. Was a decent night. The caddis were really coming off at sunset! About a size 16. Tons of em! I brought a few home in my clothes as well. lol Nick

I was out there yesterday too... Don't have much to add to Nick's post. In certain spots it felt like I could catch Drum at will, but I had a hard time willing any other species onto my hook Nick, things didn't change much where we were fishing once you left. We foul hooked a couple more carp and I got to test out my backing. I actually did fair hook a cat, but it was just a baby... Maybe 16". It was kind of cute. Got one goldeye on my last cast and called it quits about 10:30. The light was great... Big full moon, clear sky... Probably could have stayed out there all night!

Jealous I can't make it out to lockport anytime soon. But historically, does the drum fishing die down over the summer?
