Went to Montana over spring break for some skiing - and fishing! (Won't even consider a ski hill in the mountains unless there is a fishable trout stream nearby.) There was snow in the hills but in the valleys it was beautiful spring weather with highs that averaged about 15 degrees. The rivers were pre-runoff and the crowds were non-existant. We spent one gorgeous (if you can overlook 20 mph winds) day at Armstrong's Spring Creek in Paradise Valley. The spring creeks have a rep for being flat, technical water but there are plenty of riffles and deeper runs, too. I'm not exactly a small fly guru and opted for an egg and zebra midge under an indicator - which got me into 4 'bows and a nice brown. Here's some pics from Armstrong's Spent another day wading the Yellowstone River. The wind was howling - about 35 mph - and we didn't put in a very long day. But long enough for a couple cutthroat and one 'bow to bite a small Pheasant Tail. (A conservation officer reassured us that the wind was perfectly normal...) The Yellowstone is BIG water. Put away the spring creek 4 weight and haul out the 7 weight... Nevertheless, it was still easy walking and wading along its edges. Here's the pics: If you look close at the shot above you can see the orange slash on the cutthroat...

Simply spectacular! Can't beat that view!
Nice brown. Seems like most of those "wild" browns just have incredible colour and spotting.

Most of the 'bows were pretty deeply coloured, too. But I caught one 'bow that was very silvery and pale. Different strain, maybe?
