I decided to venture out to the RR Spillway on the South/East Side. There were lots of people so I opted to use the spin caster. While I was their we had several large groups(15-40) of carp meander threw. Guys were casting worms, flashy lures, jigs and getting no bits. I tried casting several different nymph and chronomid patterns on leader with bobber on the spin caster and also saw no action.
I was absolutely puzzled, by what they were feeding on. Then I noticed that what I thought was white puffs of seeds on the water from some plant was in fact White coloured may flies, (Duns?)
There were a few of these riding the water surface. I could not tell whether they were just hatching or had completed depositing their eggs and were spent. If they were emerging, were the carp then feeding on these emerging nymphs? Does anyone have a pattern they can post that shows me what these carp were so focused on?
I had great success with a small silver flashy spinner and 3 feet of mono followed by a shaggy wolly bugger made of seal or some other translucent fur in dark olive and really dark brown with a gold ribbing. I lost a few gold eye, landed a sauger and lost a very large fish with this lure. I also landed a fresh water drum with a purple wolly and flashabou ribbing, attached behind the silver spinner.
After the crowd cleared, I pulled out the fly rod and floating line, put on a small parachute light cahill coloured mayfly and tried to lure in a carp without success. I also tried a blacked headed nymph, without any success. I will have to reread everyone's post to find what works for carp.
Lastly, has anyone used a float tube in the spill way? I was thinking you would have less snags, and be able to get away from the crowded shore.
Sorry for being so long winded.
