The drum bite was on big time. Landed nine, had at least as many ldr's and misses. Most were in the 14-17 in. range. Had one 21" and one 24". My first MA drum!! Was using a 2 fly setup. Six were caught on a #10 flashback beadhead pheasant tail nymph (dropper). The other three were caught on the top fly - an olive bugger w/ rubber legs (I'm sure there's a proper name for it, but I don't know what it is).

Good stuff. I'm going to head out there now, hopefully I'll get my first cat of the year. Still can't believe I haven't hooked one yet.

Saturday evening caught a dozen drum, 3 sauger, and a goldeye.
Every time I have been out this year I have foul hooked at least 10 carp, and LDRed them of course. I have never had this happened to me so often as this year, terribly annoying when trying to fair hook fish.
One thing I have not been able to get over is the absence of catfish on the end of my line.
Has anyone down there been catching cats?
I have been using the good ole DDH, an assortment of streamers, a variety of BH nymphs, unweighted mayfly/damsel nymphs...don't know what I have been doing wrong. Any suggestions. I know the highwater has made fishing difficult at times, but there must be cats in there somewhere...

I was there Saturday morning, and found the carp to be just resting in the shallows, and not really eating. I spent all morning targeting carp, fowl hooked 4, landed many drum (on nymphs and leeches) but never had a fair hooked carp.
I did get some kitties earlier in the season, but none lately. Wait until the levels drop, and you can hit the deeper holes, you should still get some cats. Also, try getting to the point, and hitting the seams. Those often hold good cats.

Re: cats:
Two Red River guides have told me that the last month has been unusually slow on the river. They expect great fishing during high water, but not this year. I am expecting/hoping for things to pick up as water levels drop.(Sadly, with the Assiniboine at record levels, who knows when that will be?) Everything else has been perverse this spring, so why not the cats?! ....TIM

Ya I don't know if it'll be coming down anytime soon. With periodic dumps of rain and the assiniboine level still not coming down, it'll take a while! That's a lot of water...

I was at the spillway Thursday night. I caught a lot of goldeye and a couple drum. Funny thing... My friend who was spin casting next to me caught nothing but sauger (and a pickerel rig attached to a 28" carp). I couldn't catch a sauger and he couldn't catch a goldeye!
Water is still high... Islands nowhere in sight. Lots of carp slurping around at the surface, but no cats that I saw.

I guess cats are here, I've been at spillway yesterday morning, did catch some goldeye and drums and snagged some carp (I never seen so many carp at one place at the same time). There were 2 guys angling and using about 2 inch frozen shrimp as a bait. We were at the north side around where that big tree stump is. Both of them would cast so their bait falls right into the channel. They were catching cats every 5 min. I tried to wade in a little bit but I could get only 2 meters from the shore. I was able to cast my flies the same distance but I couldn't have a fly fall at the bottom behind those 2 long rocks that are now underwater (people who have been there when water is low will know what I am talking about). because i would lose a fly every time I tried to do that. It was pretty crowded so i couldn't really move around much to try to wade in different spots. Carp seamed that it's not feeding yet, I tried casting many different patterns right beside them including nymphs but no success. When I was going home I talked to some guys that were fishing right beside a dam using earth worms, and they were catching carp on that.
