This pattern has replaced 2 leech patterns I was brutalizing for a good while, now for 2 reasons. #1--it's incredibly quick and easy to tie, and two, it fooled enough rainbows at Patterson Lake this past weekend to leave me grinning all day ;D.
I'm sure it has another name, as it is just a standard mohair leech with a bit of diamond dubb and rabbit fur. But.. until then! Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you, "The Rabbit-Mohair-Diamond Leech"!
INGREDIENTS:
Hook: Size 6-12 3xl-4xl (Mustad R73-9671)
Thread: Dk. Brown or Black 6/0
Weight: 1/4 of hook shank, lead wire .015 - .020
Tail: Dark Brown Rabbit Fur
Body: Mohair Dubbing - Brown-Olive or Black
Head: Golden Brown Diamond Dub
Rib (Optional): Copper or Gold wire.
Step 1:
Cover hook shenk with a layer of thread up to barb, then wrap front 1/4 of shenk in wire. Secure the wire down with thread.
Step 2:
Cut a small tuft of rabbit's fur from a zonker, or super strip, securing it behind the lead wraps, having the tail roughly half the hooks length. Return tying thread to barb of the hook.
Step 3:
Create a dubbing loop and place the mohair dubbing in. Wind up roughly 3/4 of the shenk, secure and trim the excess off.
Step 4:
Now, take a small clump of diamond-dub, and creating a dubbing noodle (or loop for a more buggy-look/added strength), wind forward to the eye of the hook.
Step 5:
Create a nice clean head, whip finish and cement. Voila! A 2 minute fly that should be able to take the thrashing and bashing of a friendly neighbourhood triploid fishery near you!
Tight Lines!
