this is my first msg on this forum also new to fly fishing....hi! anywho went to the spillway today at around 4. very very windy but still made an effort fishing on the island. very little luck, wind was driving me nuts so i went by that patch of trees towards the point. hooked into quite a few sauger and one goldeye. used a wolly bugger (i think?). as the sun was setting i went back to the island and the wind was compeltly gone and to my suprise the goldeye (im assuming) were dancing around, everywhere i looked i was seeing ripples or fishing surfaces. this was about 9:45. so i start casting....managed to hook one goldeye then one of my last casts before i left i hook into a really nice fish! had it on for maybe 15-20 seconds before it got off, im assuming it was a cat.

Cool, good luck picking up the sport.
Whats been your most notable fly fishing experience so far?
Feel free to ask any questions, many good fly fishermen frequent the board, and will be sure to give you a hand.

Those cats are addictive. Hey offshoreonly, I think I've run into you a couple times down at the spillway, I can't recall you're name though.
Good luck with fly fishing. Joel

yeah joel i think i remember helping u land a cat last year on one of the islands lol. u had a 6lb test leader and it took forever. i used the flyrod for an hour at the spillway only to catch one tiny goldeye while i was waiting for some friends to come down and fish cats in the main channel. came back at 10:00 after my friends left and continued flyfishing and there are tons and tons of goldeye jumping in the evening now due to all the fishflies on the surface....didnt even look at my fly, tried to use something that looked like a fishfly but i think i was too deep with the sinking line. during the day i ntoiced about 1/3 of the way between the island and the gate there seemed to be a ton of goldeye caught there. dont think i can cast that far with the flyrod though >.>

Yeah that was me. Have you tried nymph patterns for the goldeye. Lately, I have had luck with #14 BH Hare's Ear.
