I'm exhausted! Bumped into Steve on the water and between the two of us we absolutely dominated the fish! Personally I landed over 40 drum and about 7 or 8 cats. I caught my personal best tonight at 38 3/4 inches! Thing was just a pig! Was a great night out and the number of fish was absolutely nuts! Definitely have to get back out there tomorrow. Fly of choice was a steelhead fly of all things. Purple marabou with an orange conehead! Fish were just killing it!

Nice cat Nick! Gotta love a night of fishing where there are so many small fish to keep you busy between the big uns'.
I'll have to break out some of the steelie flies next time I'm out there. Thanks for the tip.

Those cats can tire you out! It wasn't just the number landed, but the number on and lost. That was a beauty of a cat caught by Nick as well. As for me, I didn't land quite so many fish, but still had a great evening with 5 cats landed (one was foul hooked though, and one the fly was actually caught on a pickerel rig that had hooked the fish.) and several more cats were lost. My largest landed was 36" Lots of drum and one white bass too. A few photos from the evening: [imghttp://farm5.static.flickr.com/4069/4627999923_631f5587d8.jpg[/img]

Steve, good thing you brought out the proper artillery. ;D Nice fish as well. What were you chucking?
For crying out loud.... why do they still sell those Christmas tree rigs.... they kill a lot of fish in that river.

Ya it's pretty sad that the seasons been open like a week and you're already catching pickerel rigs with fish attached. And the amount of garbage is just brutal! It's really too bad.

Wow those are amazing fish. I have never caught a channel cat before. I have to get out there this year. Hopefully you guys can show me how to do it. I have never fly fished in a river before. Well done.

guess I should have gotten myself out this morning instead of waiting till afternoon. I went out and got fishing for about 5 or so, and there were a lot of people there. I still had the island to myself and was able to get a few fish, but nothing like how good it was yesterday. It seemed to die right off around 6:30 or so, and I ended up leaving early with only 5 or so drum and 1 cat landed, and it was snagged on aniother bait rig... (2 others lost). I think the weather change made all the difference, the air was much cooler, and the wind was howling down the floodway. At least I was able to cast with the wind. As for flies, on friday I used a DDH Leech that looks very similar to the Beck's Hex you were using Tuesday Shane. Today I tried the same, but after slow going I tried a chartreuse/white polar bear clouser, seemed to be a bit better. I did try a bright blue and red fly after seeing Nick's success on that steelhead fly, but I didn't get anything on that. Hey, at least I didn't break a rod tonight. I did break another last night!

Met up with Ron (Kilgortrout) out there tonight. Managed a few drum and foul hooked a big'un that I thought was a cat the way it was pulling (little did i know it was just coming in sideways.. haha) and even this ol' gal.

We had a good time and landed a few drum, Andy was the Bell of the ball with the big cat. We did see some strange things, a beaver swimming around. And later on as it was getting dark their were some great seething ripples and bow waved in a spot that was only about 12" deep. Cheer Ron.

Nick (Didgeridoo) and I were out there tonight. THey were swirling away in the shallows again tonight too!
Wasn't as 'bountiful' as last night, however. I just got a few goldeye. Nick was smackin' em left right and center however!
At least i got to practice my roll cast (damn rocks!) haha..
No kitty's tonight, tho. Must be their day off.

I didn't stay too much longer. It was getting chilly. I sat on the rocks for a bit, enjoyed a cigar and watched the cats slash at goldeye.
Was a decent evening despite the low water and crazy wind! I think the almost full moon and recently lowered water may have affected their feeding schedule.

I was thinking indicator + a good non P.O.S. jig hook similar to THESE would be worth it's weight in gold in that spillway there. hmmph. I'll have to get out a few more times before sink-tip season starts on the river. haha.
