I aways like to open the season in the Whiteshell, fishing for shallow-water pike. This year I was down at the lake, but only for a few hours, and only to fix up a wonky water pump at the cottage. So, feeling sorry for myself, I decided to give Lockport a try this (Sunday) morning. I was fishing the Floodway outlet by 5:15 and stayed until about 10:00. I didn't fish the plunge pool, but the pockets downstream, right out to the edge of the Red. In a nutshell, it was one of my best trips ever. I landed 10 cats, ranging from 18" to 37", two very big carp, about 15 drum (up to 24") and one cute little white bass. I fished with a two-fly rig, and the San Juan Worm (brown, sparkle chennille) edged out the chartreuse/silver clauser. My best fishing was from the north shore, but I was able to wade out to the outer reef and also catch fish casting to the edge of the river current. A slow retrieve (and lots of hang ups) worked best. The floodway channel is at a perfect level and its full of fish - don't tell anyone!! ....TIM

OHHH. AHHH!!!!, sounds just great, I will have to go by for a try myself. I drove by Saturday and the water looked highish. Did you drive in off the road on the north shore the same way as before the construction. Cheers Ron.

I came in from the south and waded across the gap downstream of the plunge pool, but that was an adventure! I had about 3" of freeboard on the waders! Saw people driving in from the north, but did not take the route myself. As far as I can see, you can't access that road directly off #44 because of the floodway construction. May have to come in from East Selkirk. People casting jigs were also catching lots of drum from the downstream pools on the south side, but I didn't see them take cats. I also didn;t fish there because it was a bit crowded. ...TIM

Thanks Tim I will give it a try tomorrow, no takers to ride out to the parkland and I do not want to drive all that way by myself. So I will take a short trip and spend the day at the river, thanks for the help. Cheers Ron. .

I'm heading out after work. I'll try to post a report for tomorrow.
Question: How do you post pics? The link in the "Fish Photos" does not work anymore.

The link in the "Fish Photos" does not work anymore. use an image hosting site like tinypic.com (they even have an option to resize your image to a nice 640x480 forum-friendly one) and then simply click that little picture frame (between the globe and the mail button above the text box) and copy the image url into there.

I use photobucket.com and hot link the IMG code into the text, when you post, the hotlinks show up as photos.
