The floodway outlet at Lockport is ice free. Head there last night after work, and the suckers are in: Caught it on a floating jig minnow imitation. Fair hooked. I was using a hopper/dropper config with a prince nymph below. I don't know if it was pushing it away, or just going for it. Clearly they are spawning right now. I caught it on the south shore right up against the concrete for the overflow.

Headed back on the 31st, met up with Gaston. It was very windy that Wednesday afternoon, and very difficult to cast. We tried the south shore for a while, but no luck (Gaston had a couple of hits, nothing for me). We decided to try the north side, and had to hike in a bit as the road is closed right there, and we didn't want to drive around the barricades. I was fishing with my favourite Lockport rod, my Kamloops Dragonfly 10' 9wt, when my fly got caught in the riprap as I was power stroking forward, snapping the upper section. Very frustrating, and I hadn't brought in a backup; it was in the truck. As the north side seemed more windy, I decided to head back to the south side, and Gaston head home. I fought the wind until about 6:30, when it died down completely and turned into a really nice evening of fishing. It is also when I started catching fish. Unfortunately, they were all fowl hooked. Didn't matter what I was using, I would only hook the fish in the body. First to hand was the following walleye/sauger: After that, it was about a dozen suckers, all in the 20 - 22 inch range: I had a couple of very strong fish get loose, fowled again I assume, but very large fish none the less. I hesitated to post this update, given not one fair caught fish, but each time I think of Wednesday evening, with the sun and no wind, and the strong bend in the rod, I smile.
