Well I just got back from a trip to the Red. Finally made the walk in to the floodway outlet. Fished the south side between the reef and the spillway. Was a beautiful evening for fishing. Tried ever fly I had from nymphs to closer minnows. Then I tied on a bunny type leach made out of red squirrel, first cast I had a big strike second strip. Missed the strike and when I brought it in there was nothing left of it except a little fuzzy body with bead chain eyes, the tail was completely gone rendering it use less. The only one I made go figure. Again back to changing flies again looking for something that would work. Finally got another strike this time on a black nose dance , its fish on only a small one and its coming at my to fast to pick up the line and its gone. No big deal I've found another fly that works, wrong next cast and I lose that one and only fly this time to a rock bass.
The sun is now really starting to go down not much time left. There is about a half dozen other fly fishers there fishing the reef. One guy is fighting a monster carp.
Now I'm starting to retry flies that I've all ready tried. I tie on a big fat polar channel leach with a black and yellow marabou tail . I make one long cast and let it sink while I light a smoke. Three strips and bang my lines not budging I quickly check to make sure I'm no snagged and nope shes a moving. I toss the smoke and pick put the extra line and its game on. The guy on the reef is still fighting his carp and now I'm fighting something that putting and awful big bend in my Sage Fli 890. Twenty minutes of fighting and I finally see it its a cat fish the size of an alligator. Ten more minutes of fighting it and I get it close enough to grab it . I go to grab it and like a little school girl I got scared that it was going to bite me or something and again it was gone. Five or ten more minutes of fighting it and the other guy is still fighting his carp. Finally the fish is starting to get tired the sun is slowly going down below the trees and the bait fishers beside me are anxiously waiting to see how big the fish is that I have. Its close to shore again, I go to turns its head towards shore so I can make another tempt at grabbing it and SNAP my Sage Fli 890 snaps a little more than half way up the rod just above where the two sections connect. Panic sets In that I'm going to have to fight this thing with the bottom half of my rod. There is no way I'm losing my line to this fish too. No little school girl now I reach down and stick my hand right in its mouth and toss it up on shore. Now I'm standing there cursing under my breath as the bait fishers look on and one pipes up and asks "Was it worth it?"
It turns out that I didn't even have my phone with me to take a picture but I did measure it and it was 35 1/2". By far the biggest fish that I've ever caught.
Was it worth it? Not by far I have just as much fun casting that rod as I do catching fish on it. Its the second time that I've broken that rod fighting fish the last time it was a pike in the fall so it wasn't to bad. Now I'll be with out my 8wt for the summer while I send it away to get fixed, again.
As I make the long walk back to the car now sobbing like a little school girl, buddy is still fighting the carp.Hope he had better luck than I cause it wasn't worth it for me.
