When matching fly rods and reels, I always hear that you have to match the line with the reel with the rod. What would be so wrong if I perhaps matched a used 6 wt. line and reel with a new 8 or 9 wt. rod? Has anyone been brave enough to experiment with this, any bad experiences?

The 6 wt. reel would just be temporary 'til I have enough money to put aside for a 9 wt. reel. Does anyone know of a nice 9 wt. reel for less than $100?

You can not cast a 6 wt line on an 8 or9 wt rod. There is not enough weight in the line to load the rod properly. The same could be said for the reel. If you put an 8 wt line on the reel you may only have enough capacity for 20-30 yards of backing. Now if you happen to tie into a big fish that can run over 100 yards what the heck are you going to do. Always try to match your outfits.

Well the biggest 'thing' is the 6wt line won't load the rod. More accurately much more line needs to be out and managed. You can still only use the flies and catch the fish you would on 6wt line on a 6wt rod only now you are playing them on a 9wt. I once brought the wrong rod tube so spent a day casting 4 wt line on an 8wt rod not much fun. Once you get outside the 5-6 wt rod reel sizes (and more so outside the 4-8 wt) prices go up as there is less demand. Not saying <$100 but a Pflueger trion would be your best value. And of course there is always the used market

Thanks for the feedback. I was just curious as to what the big deal was with mismatching rod and reel, makes sense now... never got a good explanation. Looks like I'll have to start looking around.
I've looked at the FH, but I can't recall if they had any 9 wt. reels. Does WS sell them?
