Late last night my brother phoned me to do some ice fishing for some pike. I wanted to try using a big fly with lots of flash. So before going to bed I tied a fly with a bunch of colors and lots of flash. Adding some eyes.and weight. Wouldn't be able to cast it very well on a fly rod but this is probably the closest I'll get to fly fishing until spring. There was about 6 inches of ice and saw one ski-doo and a couple of dirt bikes on the ice. I drilled a few holes and set up my flasher and tied on my big colorful fly. It didn't sink very well but managed to get it to the bottom. In about 15 minutes I had a fish on the screen and he bumped my fly. I slowly lifted my fly up and he followed it up. Only a couple of feet from the hole he grabbed the fly and bite me off. Was in such a rush this morning forgot leaders. On the flasher you could see he was still there so my brother dropped his jig and b**t down and he grabbed that too. He managed to get the fish to the top of the hole was about a 6 pound pike. I was trying to get the fish out of the hole and his line broke. There went my fly and his jig. Was the only fly I brought next time I'll bring more.Managed to get one small pike after that but not on the fly. Any one else try using flies for ice fishing. First time for me but no the last.

I was out last week using a waxworm tie and a beadhead yellow marabou fly and got 3 brookies, sadly one started leaking eggs so I rushed to get her back in the water, tis the season I guess. There are a lot of people tying ice jigs with good success, it offers the fish a little something different. I have even had good pike success using a big bunny fur fly sprayed with gulp alive on a tip up. Go for windlass tip ups and on a breezy day the bunny fur will go wild jigging with the wind. As for the light and quick bites, this $3.00 rig fixed that problem, the best part is, no hook ingestion like on normal tip-ups, the hooks were all in the top lip. Or I suppose You can spend the $50.00 for the Automatic fisherman set-up and hope Your rod works with it, personally, I'd put that money towards fur and feathers.
