Hearing that the water had risen, I planned on heading out to Lockport this morning for a try but was stopped - never got past the bedroom window - by the heavy winds. At the supper table, just as we were tucking into a nice venison roast, I began to think that an evening fish just might be worth the trouble. It was either that or another evening of watching Olympics. To make a long story short - sort of - I hit the water by 7:00 and by 9:00 - dusk - I had landed three nice cats and lost two more after long fights. Hot, indeed! Water levels were very high - to within 6" of the top of the walkway on the east side! Some of that might have been wind tide but flows were fairly strong all down the east side. I could only fish quite a ways downstream, on the shallowest parts of the big rock reef/point. Fished with a two-fly rig and caught most on the goofy San Juan worm - flourescent yellow - and one on a minnow immitation. Fished drifting across and down stream. Lost a couple of sauger as well. An Ephoron (white mayfly)hatch was evident, but it was very sporadic. Last fish broke my rod but at least I didn't lose any glasses ;D Time to test the streamside warranty!...TIM

Went out again last nite (Wednesday) from work. What a difference a couple of days makes! On Saturday, after a few days of strong north winds the water was almost to the top of the platform on the east side. Last nite, after a couple of days of strong SOUTH winds, the water was three feet lower - 6" below the bottom of the concrete platform! The reef was well exposed and all the areas where I caught cats on Saturday were pretty well high and dry.
No matter, as it turned out. Still lots of fish around and very catchable. Caught more on a minnow immitation than on the goofy San Juan worm. The only thing I can't figure out is why I have the place all to myself?!...TIM
BTW, lots of sauger being caught by the shoreline crowd. Fishing further out, I didn't have a sniff from these critters.

Hey Tim, no one is there with you because of that little black cloud hanging over your head. (ha). Glad you are still catching them.

Tim, you're becoming somewhat of a Lockport catfish "guru"... (Maybe a busted/lost equipment guru as well???)

Tim, you're becoming somewhat of a Lockport catfish "guru"...Ah, I am but a "Grasshopper" next to Master Thompson. .... fact is, Stu's tips and tricks got me in the zone and I am merely adding a few refinements with each passing trip. The river is very fishable for ffers right now....an assertion I hope to prove tomorrow morning. ...TIM

Tim, you're becoming somewhat of a Lockport catfish "guru"...Talk a about a curse....thanks Dale! Went out this morning. Got there well before sunrise, but was beaten to the best spot by Don Sexton. Didn't matter. Not even a sniff. Don had one fish on but no other hits. Saw a few fish on the surface but couldn't determine if they were cats, carp or suckers (some were definitely the latter.) It all goes to show that, when you think your have Lockport figured out, it will straighten you out! Don't know if it was the curse of being called a "guru" or Sexton's bad Karma": couldn't have been me ....TIM

spent a few hours just north of the fence yesterday afternoon
water is close to the concrete again and the carp are everywhere bobbing around
managed to foul hook a carp that bent my rod in half for 15 minutes, and foul hooked a walleye
did catch two goldeye on a #6 white leech (obviously had eyes larger than their stomachs) and one fellow on the concrete caught a 2' cat with bait
saw lots of activity in the water but the few pail people were having little to no action
