Just wanted to thank troutbum. Met up with him last night and he showed me the basics of fly casting. Also gave me some good info on types of flies to try and line as well. Now I can say things are starting to make sense ;D

Your on Your way with thinking like that. I have found that the best casting is always out of the water. It's when You see that trophy brown that everything You learned goes out the window, lol. But seriously, My wife extended Her cast by an easy 20 feet practising in the yard and the pothole at the end of the driveway is custom made for delivering a roll cast to. I have always felt that the more comfortable You get with Your cast on land, the more focused You are with Your retrieve in the water. A long fancy cast looks great to all but a perfect retrieve is what looks best to the fish. The hardest part of fly fishing for Me is remembering what worked on the last fish I caught. Best of luck and don't forget Your camera....

I agree with learning on land. It is much easier to concentrate on the little things. I think I'm going to hit the water this weekend. I'm heading up to the Ducks so I figure I have to give it a shot

I always thought roll casts were something that could only be practiced on the water?
Anyways, I agree with the lawn thing but I tend to prefer using the city's man-made lakes for my casting practice. One time I was practicing my casts on one of the ponds near my home and an older gentleman asked if there were fish in the lake. Jokingly I told him "Yeah", and as I was walking home I saw him with his rod and a bucket headed for the lake!! It was hilarious... ;D I guess I should have told him I was joking!
James.
