New to a lot of it, I have fly fished for 30 years off and on but never really had a chance to learn much from others. I am on a quest this year to nail 30 species on the fly rod and that brings Me into Manitoba. I am from Kamsack SK now but hope to move to Roblin this fall. Anyways its been slow so far this year but I am learning a lot and hope to learn a lot here as well. My fly tying is not pretty, My casting is not pretty either but I've managed some dandies this year so obviously the fish are not talent scouts. Looking forward to sharing and learning a bit as I browse the boards. Anyways good to be here and hope to join the MFFA really soon as it appears to be money well spent. Cheers and tight lines...

From what I have read so far, you are anything but "new" to the game!. Enjoyed your fly tying links as well as your objectives and wisdom (....fish are not talent scouts....: priceless!)
Welcome aboard and I look forward to more....TIM
PS. Please explain the name!! ;D

Thanks for the welcome. In being a beginner as I call it, I have never learned from anyone. As a boy I got a fly rod and fly line from an old man, no leader, no reel. I am still guilty of using flouro line instead of tippets. My fly tying consisted of pillow feathers and Mom's yarn the Bumble bee and the cottonwood seed, My main ties, I now tie cottonwood seeds with bunny fur and they still work wonders at times for rising carp too. Oh and My first bow on the fly was actually caught behind Me as I was fishing from a dock. I've still never landed a dry fly fish but love to watch them splash at them. My foam swimmers just barely surface but don't actually stay dry on top. The name came from Goofing around with one of those labelling guns trying to name My aquarium fish. I closed My eyes and stamped then spun it back and stamped. The full name was Oxquo Tloig and I figured it was original enough. Kinda stuck with Me I guess. I learn a lot about fish behaviour with the aquarium fish and have spent years breeding over 500 species and subspecies. The number 1 rule of aquatics that I take into fishing is that fish simply can't read books, even if they are suppose to do something by nature, they often don't realise they are suppose to. They react to some colors like crazy and others not at all yet, all of a sudden, one day they are crazy about a color they never liked. Sadly, I am the one teaching My wife to fly fish and I really don't feel qualified. Practice in the backyard though for 1 hour seems to be worth 40 hours practice on the water casting wise. Both of Us improved dramatically. This Year is the first Year I have fished for trout in over 15 years so I have a lot to learn. One of My biggest dillema's is whether I am stripping the fly right. Sadly I had to work during the trout festival but made it as far as Twin on the Sunday, where I lost a Tiger off the boat launch while cleaning My line that haunts Me every night. He hit hard and skimmed the surface almost into the backing and then snapped free, all I could say in My defense was Hey, I wasn't even fishing, that's not fair. This year We are on the hunt for 30 species minnows included on the fly and then I am retiring My old 5wt. Things are slow because the wife wants to do the same thing and We are stuck on her fish at the moment. It's been a lot of fun learning about new locations and new species, I've even fallen in love with the town of Roblin and am listing the house here so We can move hopefully this fall. I have had a lot of firsts this year, some awesome and some not so awesome like filling My waders to the hilt, Yep they hold water in and out I found. I made an awesome 80 foot cast to a massive brown, which would have impressed Me so much more if He would have risen 10 feet closer to My fly. Anyways its fun to learn, and by far the best thing that I ever done in My life. I even found a way to almost enjoy ice fishing, put a fly tying table in Your ice shanty. I still get the urge to drill 50' of holes to strip a fly through though. By the way the name is John.
