I've been making many attempts to catch something from the Red river and no fish will grace me with even a nibble. I've been guessing how to present the fly and what to use. I'm using yellow things, white and flashy things, minnow things, and ddh things (but mine look more like skinny Wookies, as in Star Wars). I've tried fast retrieve, slow stead retrieve, slow small jerky retrieve, letting it sink down before retrieve, and retrieving just after the fly settles. I use a sinking leader with about 5 feet of brown mono on the end. I've tried casting up stream, cross stream, down stream and across current transitition zones. Because it's close to home, I've been fishing on the downstream side of the floodway gates in St. Norbert. I go after work or crack of dawn. I'm after any fish that's in there. I'm not fussy. What am I doing wrong? Erika

Cast 45 degrees upstream and do not touch your fly line at all. Let the current drag the fly downstream all the time keeping your eye on the fly line. As soon as your line moves or hesitates set the hook. REMEMBER do not touch or strip the fly in during this presentation. Once your line straightens out then do a slow strip retrieve.

I have found that if the fly is not getting down to the bottom it is not hooking up with much. Cheers Ron.

I dunno I have caught some of my best fish (see the fattie in the banner) there with nothing more than a floating line and unweighted fly (and not getting very deep). Of course when the fish are showin fins and that water is under 24" getting to the bottom isn't the main issue.
