1. Highly visible flies. 2. work the seams. 3. 8wt or higher. Looking for spots? Ask Stu he has them memorized

You picked a bad year to start for kitties on the Red, in my opinion. One of the best places, certainly for this time of the year, would have been in the outlet of the floodway north of Lockport. Apparently it is closed right now for construction, and is not accessible for fishing. The other primo place would be the "island" in the river just out from the concrete walkway on the east side, but you need to know how to wade to it, and I believe the flows make that a very dangerous proposition. When the water drops, you will see the island, and a path to access it.
Another spot that produces, although not as good, is a hole near the east bank. If you go to the riverside, past the end of the concrete shelf, there is a large boulder on the shore. About 20 or so feet (Stu et al, correct me if I'm wrong) from the bottom of that boulder is the start of a hole that often has cats in it. Again, the flows are such that you might have a problem successfully fishing it, but a good sink line or sinktip, with proper drifting (practice, I guess. I still haven't figured it out) you might hit a kitty.
Finally, they are often stacked up near the concrete shelf, but you would need to get there at the right time, as often the gear and bait crowd will shoulder you out of the way. I know some ffers will just continue to fish, and not worry about the others, but I tend to move away from the crowds. I am always afraid to hit a kid, and I don't like fishing ass to cheek like that anyway.

I am going to try my luck on Saturday evening, and if it goes well Sunday also, Darrell might show as well as maybe Ken (DrGortex) he has about 150 flash rods to try out. Anyone else stuck in the city for the weekend that than sneak out there in the evening I would be glad to see Ya. Cheers Ron.

I have heard conflicting reports about the Red (Lockport) so far this year. Seems that there are many people having fantastic success with big kitties this year. (gear boards)
Want a piece of advice from someone who is by no means an expert on the Red? Go to the Red mid-week during the mornings when there is nobody around. As Stephen says, it is no fun being crammed in there like sardines and trying to whip a fly rod around at the same time. Most of the primo spots for FFers are hard to access right now but you should still be able to find the kitties. Follow Robs advice for Rod/Fly selection and hold on!!!
James.

Looks like fun.... Taken on Saturday during the long weekend (Not by me). Tell me, where the hell does a FFer have any possible chance to cast? James.

Wait until the water drops a bit more, and wade out to the island. Cast back towards the shore and get the fish they cant reach!!!!!

Looks like fun.... Taken on Saturday during the long weekend (Not by me). Tell me, where the hell does a FFer have any possible chance to cast? James. Nothing like getting away from it all. Obviously the best time to avoid rush hour is during the week. I have been spoiled living up north for so many years. Was at Lockport last week and shared the shore with about 6 others down from McKays and got about 30 plus Cats, all between 34 and 36. But I cheated so I'll only post pics caught on fly. Will most likely be up at Barbe and Athapap beginning of June(fly rod in hand) and hope to do some bragging and picture posting.... I wish you all a successful summer of fishing .

That picture is the main problem at Lockport. If someone does try to crowd me out well it's bad luck for him. My fly may end up stuck somewhere. I will cast the longest line possible to persuede people to give me enough room. Am I being nasty, NAH, just protecting my space.

Thanks to all of you that have contributed to this. It was very helpful. I went down to Lockport on Sunday evening. It was pretty crowded and unfortunately, I got skunked. I did however meet up with Ron. He helped me with a few pointers (and some flies). Not discouraged easily, i went back on Monday afternoon. It wasn't as crowded and I was able to hook up with a couple of fish. Unfortunately, i wasn't able to land either of them, but it was still fun. Despite some pretty heavy winds, i decided to give it a try again tonight. It was nowhere near as busy as it was on the weekend and I was able to land this catfish. Not the greatest photo, but i just wanted to take a quick one and get it back in the water. I can't wait to hook up with another. Thanks again, Josh

Great job on the catfish... there's no turning back now. Prepare for the insanity to set in...

Josh, glad to see you hooked up, nice to have meet up with you. As a Fly fisher on the river you do stand out as the odd duck. Yes it was a packed house there on the long weekend. I hiked out onto the bar/Shoal down stream from the dam. It is shallow enough there to walk wayyyyy out into the river wayyyy beyond the bank fishing lines. i found a hole out there and dragged along the bottom and got some strong hits, so I kept trying, When I finally pulled in my line I realized my hook was pulled out near straight. Groan , how goofy of me. I switched to a size 4 hook and they bend much easier than the big monsters I was using before. When I changed up hooks I hooked into two big ones but alas did not land them. By then it was getting dark, I got out there late. I decided to wade in closer. On the way in to shore there was a monster "fish" in the shallows, in closer inspection it was a beaver. I would have tried a tan and beaver but I left that fly box at home Despite this it was a most singularly pleasant evening. Cheers Ron.
