What do you all think of the manitoba fishing licence going up in price?
Just hope they use all the extra cash for the future of fishing in someway..

In fact, the increase is going the the Fisheries Enhancement Fund, for fish habitat restoration, research and monitoring projects. Overall, I'd say a pretty good deal. One thing that FEF will support is aerators on trout lakes ...TIM

I honestly don't mind paying the extra since it is going to be put to a good cause. Realistically, in comparison to other provinces we are still much cheaper than most.

Personally I think they licenses are a great value. If you have ever looked at the budget vs license and fines revenue stream.
Tim do you know of other things the fund pays for outside of Parkland lakes?
Is there any habitat improvement/monitoring/reasearch going on out there. IS the work governmental or is it like Fish Futures where groups with plans apply and any left over money goes into the provincial coffers annually

I know that FEF is funding the work that MFFA is doing on the Whiteshell river, which includes the Window on the Water project, and we are doing a river assessment to see the effects of previous work (a follow up assessment, I guess).
I am going to try and push for a trout river closer to Winnipeg, like the Brokenhead was. I also know that there is some work afoot to get Muskie waters back in Manitoba somewhere. I also have this perverse idea I am toying with of trying to get the Kokanee's back in Manitoba, even thought some have laughed at me when I mention it (if I was worried about being laughed, well, I probably would never leave the house!)
That's all I can recall off the top of my head.

All good questions, Robert, and I don't have all the answers. I do know:
1) only a small part of the overall fund is going to aeration of Parkland lakes.
2) My understanding is that many of the projects go through 3rd parties, like the MFFA project on the Whiteshell River.
3) Many of the projects will be collaborations with government, mainly things that the Fisheries Branch sees as important but does not have the budget to undertake. I trust them to have a good understanding of the fisheries management /research/monitoring priorities.
4)Decision-making on where the funding goes lies in a committee that includes representation from FLIPPR, MFFA, MWF, Fish Futures and etc. As I understand it, Fisheries Branch has an advisory role.
Overall, I see it as an excellent public/NGO partnership. It will take a bit of time for them to work out all the kinks but, IMHO, this is a big step in the right direction. And it took a bit of guts on the part of a generally risk-adverse provincial government to raise license fees....TIM PS, I'd be pleased to be corrected by anyone from the Fisheries Branch or FEF if I have gotten any of the above wrong.

is there something somewhere that says the increase in licenese fees is in fact to be dedicated for specific purposes? call me a skeptic but often times fee increases just end up in general revenue.

Randy:
I don't know what the exact commitment is. However, with lots of NGOs involved, I think there will be swift reaction if the amount available doesn't match the additional revenue. It's not a hard calculation....TIM
