Got out to the floodway yesterday am, and found the water level quite low, lots of rock visible in the floodway. Didn't look likely that I'd find critters in the pool below the floodway dam, so I tried on the river end of it, and had an enjoyable, but not very successful morning. Lots of drum jumping, chasing minnows or small fish of some kind, and very rarely attacking my minnow imitations. Got one drum on a zonker, but all other patterns seemed to fail (even the ddh leech!!). Carp also all around me, but could not tempt any to bite on anything.
Still have yet to catch a carp or cat on the fly. Sigh...
In frustration, I went around the corner near the dam, and tried out the 'other gear'. Lost count of fish caught. Again, sigh...clearly, my FFing skills have a long way to go.
But for those who know how, the carp are there.

Did you try the fly rod near the dam?

Just wondering... what kind of other gear was it you were using? Were you jigging or using some kind of soft lure? Is it something you can reproduce using a fly?

Just wondering... what kind of other gear was it you were using? Were you jigging or using some kind of soft lure? Is it something you can reproduce using a fly? Actually thought of that, as I was catching (used almost exclusively white jig head and yellow tail). Would need to use a sink tip line, and/or weighted (beadhead?) fly, largish, with a long active tail - perhaps a yellow zonker, or a large yellow-hackle WB with a long tail. If I had had more time to kill, I would have gone back to the car and pulled out the fly gear to try some of these, and would have tried wading in the shallows just south of the ladder. BUT, the wife was waiting, and it does NOT pay to keep her waiting too long... I will be trying some of these things some time soon... Ken

Went to lockport on friday. I did not hook anything in the carp/cat class. The action seemed to be in the goldeye camp. I must have got a bite every cast, or close enough. I even managed to land a fair % of them. They were good fun on a #3 wt. They really liked a rust DDH with a yellow tail. Followed by a brown one. Thanks to Stu for putting me onto this fly. This is sounding much like the jig setup i see some people using out there. Ken I think i made you a few of these, if not I could and you could give them a try, course might not work next time out, but I have had some goldeye on this fly in the past. Cheers Ron.
