So I had some time mid week and Tim Sopuck has always extolled the virtues of fishing the Red during the non evenings and weekends. So I gave it a whirl. It is well into the 3rd season since I swore off the place (garbage, crowds, morons etc)
Left my son's school at 9am and was on site in 45minutes (with a stopover at Tim Horton's) Oh I forgot how quick it was.
Get to the gate side and it was really rolling through so I made my way to the outlet.
The way in was way too muddy for a mini van so I parked on the road and hiked in. I forgot How buggy it can be there. I had only brought the spey rod so I was looking for 'some' current. But it was kinda slow so I ended up doing repeated switch casts and snake rolls and even ended up doing a lot of overhead casting.
I walked down to the shore line dodging all the garbage (oh I forgot) and then the smell hit me (something else I forgot)
I was wondering if the 2+ years I have spent away would make this a learning experience
So I set up put on a EEB and had a fish on the first cast. Reset then had a second fish on the second cast but this one lasted longer till it shredded my 12lb poly leader. Ok set up again and put on 17lb. and get a 3rd fish on the 3rd cast.
Carp Cats Drum on the EEB, my Stouts tail in white and a grey over red marabou tube fly. Fishing was hot for the 1st 1½ hours then slowed with less fish. Bunch of fish 2 break offs 1 @ 12lb and 1 @ 17lb and a bunch of hits with fights of various lengths.
I flicked some of the garbage away for the photos and I have my waders in the washer to get the stink out but I had the place basically to myself barring the boats that I needed to get out of the way of as they headed up to get goldeyes for bait.
Oh I forgot how hard those cats pull
