I'm coming to Winnipeg Mid-June for a few days and will be bringing my fly rod. I've enjoyed reading the posts on this forum on the Red and Robert's article on getting started on fly fishing the Red, but had a few basic questions which I'm hoping some members can answer:
I haven't seen many posts this year on fishing the Red. It is open around Lockport now, isn't it? Are people just waiting for it to pick up?
Are the channel cats mostly concentrated at the Lockport dam, or do you work your way downstream too?
I notice a lot of people are posting that they are fishing the floodway at night. Is this the preferred time or do you still have good odds during the day?
Does it look like there will be flooding this spring, or is the water expected to stay low? If there is no flooding, is there still water in the floodway to fish?
For fishing the floodway, is the preferred area mainly near the outlet or is it good throughout the floodway?
I'm assuming the floodway outlet is near the Lockport dam?
As I said, some very basic questions. A few years ago I tried flyfishing just downstream of the dam during very high water and landed a couple of carp, but cats on the fly eluded me. Hope somebody can help!

Ron there are always a lot of questions on fishing the Red so hopefully these are the answers you need. Yes you can fish all day on the river and catch fish. As everyone knows fish become more active towards night. In fact the cat I caught was hooked at 9:15 approx. Cloudy day so it looks really dark. You can fishfrom the dam down stream to the floodway quite safely but once you pass this area it takes some homework to find out where it is safe to wade. Overall the best area to fish is the above area. Tie up some Easter Eeg Buggers. Killer flies.

Ron - can't add much more to what flyfisheranonymous and Robert noted. But as for flooding - not unless we get a load of rain ...... ummmm - yeah. Levels will fluctuate at Lockport with the wind tides. North wind pushes lake Winnipeg water south, and south winds push water out to Lake Wpg ....... yeah - sounds like much - but .... 'tis what it is. Levels can change easily enough over an hour - just gotta keep an eye on things. As for activity ...... don't think many are posting - but the action (as I hear) is pretty good right now. People are not noting their success as much (keeping meat hunters out of the know) ........ Anyhow - as for low waters - even with the floodway not in use, there's still some fish in teh backwaters there - don't toss in teh towel totally on that spot. either way - have a blast. Hope you string into some fine kitties and carp ........ darrell,

The 2 Fishing reporters they have in the Free Press are saying the action for cats is 'crazy' right now and all below the locks.

With those reports there will be a gazillion people out there. Just gotta find a place where one can cast and not fight the conventional anglers.

Would that be a "Red River Slam"?
