Well, I hit Lockport on Saturday AM, rising with early birds to be on the water before 5:30. With the previous day's north wind the reef was just barely exposed, but I was able to fish all around it, including the tailrace on the west side. I was impressed by the relative clarity of the water (visibility at least a foot) and I know I was fishing on the bottom.
I caught sauger and a drum early (before sunrise) but nothing after that. I saw no cats swirling and only two rises near shore that I took to be goldeye. The shoreline crowd was not doing much, only picking up the occasional small drum or bullhead. Is that typical for this time of year? Typical for this year? Just a "cold front" (relatively speaking) thing (I actually wore a fleece for the first time this summer!)?
I quit at 8:00am and decided to check around. No evidence of carp at the floodway or at Cooks Ck in East Selkirk. I also took a drive up to End of Main and checked the creek coming out of Goldeye Lake for carp - Nada. I also checked three wetlands connected to the Red and saw no evidence of carp.
Where hast thou gone, oh noble carp?! (And, for that matter, cats?)
BTW, has anyone been fishing the Assiniboine at the Portage dam? If anyone has some free advice on some carp/cat opportunities around Winnipeg, I'd be thrilled to hear of them...TIM

I went down stream from the assinibione park bridge, north side, 2 house lots past where the park ends. There is a bit of a bump in the bank out into the river creating 2 pools one on each side of the bump, follow so far? The slow water in the pools on each side were covered with foam. Lots of big carp on the surface(under the foam) mouthing around and eating what I do not know. This spot has carp but without the foam they are closer to the bottom. I go to this spot often as I live close to this part of the river. I did not see any sign of cats this visit. And no I did not hook any carps as I did not find out what they were eating When you are done you can go and get a ice cream. Cheers Ron.

Tks, Ron!. I was able to follow O.K, (especially the ice cream part). When you get the the private shoreline, do you make a point of staying in the water, or do folks not have a problem with you going on their shoreline?...TIM

No it is ok the bank is flat at the bottom by the water and the trees are thick, I have never had a problem before, even when the people at the house see me.. Boy I wish I was able to go off with you guys, but no time for me to be doing that. 'Tell us how it goes Cheers Ron..

Stu's son, Kevin, under Stu's tutelage, hooked five cats in short order. It all involved secret passwords, incantations, tarot cards and maybe even a few chicken bones waved over the waters --- oh yeah, they also seemed to know what they were doing..... A few saugers were also caught. Stephen was also out and he picked up a few fish (no cats) further downstream. I was fishless but it was fun to be out with other ffers for a change and I learned lots watching the old (and young) masters at play...TIM

hey Tim - all PIE aside, I think you might have something with the chicken bone thing .......... the tags and landings I had last Tues were on flies I ..... acquired off Stu ............ Tried my similar / replica patterns - nada. I dunno, but that DDH has got to be linked somewhere. Whatever it is Stu - you do that hoo-hoo that you do - that there DDH works just fine ......... now I gotta tie up some med-brown DDH and brown DDH-zonker strip flies.
