Fished the floodway last night. Landed one nice pike (22" range, I think) while the sun was high and the winds strong, but no other action.
Once the winds died, and the sun went down to the tree tops on the west side, there was a caddis hatch, and the goldeye action took off. Using small streamers, fellow fly fisher Chris (from MFFA) and myself were catching them steady until 10:30, and I am sure if I had the time and a lantern, I could have kept it up much later (damn work restricting my fishing time). They were hitting cast after cast, and there was no point in trying to keep count.
It got so easy, that I stopped using a Blacknose Dace like pattern I had (thanx for the suggestion Chris). I don't know where I got it from, but it was a handy find in my fly boxes last night. I noticed quite a bit of the goldeyes jumping and clearing the water looking like the weren't feeding, but fleeing. I switched to my Muad'dib pattern, which is heavier, and was still getting good hits, even though it was below where we were fishing the Blacknose Dace pattern. Never got any strikes from whatever was chasing the goldeyes though. If I was a betting man, I would bet pike.

I wonder if those might have been cats moving in?...TIM I wouldn't be surprised. I am hearing of folks starting to pull cats out of the red and assiniboine, so it would make sense. I have got to figure out what pattern to throw at them when they are culling goldeye...

I thought I explained this earlier, but a check of the board shows otherwise. This is my Muad'dib fly (mooneye fly tied with influence from Spey/Dee fly tying style; mooneye Dee; muad'dib). It is the pattern I came up with when I was trying to debate with some of the more seasoned members of our fly fishing community about using woolly buggers. I wanted to know how different from the woolly a pattern needed to be before those reluctant to use them would consider using one. I started to thinking along the lines of changing certain things. If it had bead chain eyes, would someone consider fishing it then? What about an overwing? A tail of something other than marabou? Maybe mallard? Then I thought of changing the palmered cock/hen hackle for a palmered mallard flank feather, added a mallard feather wing, and the eyes, and I thought I might have a pattern that imitates a goldeye fry. I usually try and tie it a bit thick, and hope the palmered mallard flank adds a bit more depth of body. Unfortunately the only thing that seems interested in this fly are the goldeyes/mooneyes. I may have had some interest from the walleyes last year, not sure...

How deep did you/do you fish it? Cheers Ron.

On that night, I was too lazy and/or excited to change my line, so I was fishing it on a floating line with about a 5 foot leader. I have also fished it with an intermediate sink line. I will be trying it with a full sink line and let you know.

yesterday produced many drum ...several in the 24" range... one pike(snot rocket) and one silver bass (10:30am-2:00pm
not many out until after 1:30pm so was a quality quiet time
(only saw one cat taken by a boater in the middle of the current)
appeared quiet for the shore fishers
