Probably teased Robert enough by now:)) so the base pattern is-------
size1 or 2 salmon hook XS Gold Dumbell eyes White thread UV Crystal Flash over white thread body and coated with Hard as Nails White Bucktail for the underbody 5/6 strands of UV Crystal Flash for an underwing Grey Superhair as the over wing
seems to be acounting for larger Cats on average when fished the right way:))))))
basically a Super Clouser tied Goldeye colours:)))
Just dont ask me about the UltraLeech Carp pattern

Hey Cane;
Could you substitute a mono wrap over silver tinsil for the "UV Crystal Flash over white thread body and coated with Hard as Nail"?
I recently found this pattern in a fly tying book, and it is one of Lefty Kreh's recommended patterns, called a Monofilament Fly. It uses materials like bucktail or calf hair or polar bear for the wing materials, and recommends adding flash to the wings as well.
I have tied up a few, and am going to try them tomorrow night at Lockport.

certainly worth an explore Stephen- let us know how it goes:)))- the UV over white thread with hard as nails creates a translucent purple blue body that works well with the purple/blue underwing of the UV flash. Clouser himself has noted that people would,nt buy the Clousers he personally ties for his own use because they are so sparse:)))))) The version we have been using is SPARSE VERY SPARSE and relies i believe on its translucency/hazy form/goldeye suggestive colours AND the way we have been fishing it for its effectiveness:))))
At least for me Fly Fishing is all about exploring- when someone tells me hard and fast rules i,m sceptical:)))) everyone finds their own unique personal solutions to the same problem - that of catching fish under varying circumstances - anything i have have to say should always be taken be taken in the spirit its given- sharing some exploring in the hope it helps someone else,s explore:))))- its great to see you explore:)))))))))))))))))

Even tied a few weighted Ally Shrimp - and a couple Ally's on ... scud hooks - tie a shrimp on a shrimp hook - go figgure Man - I just might be there a while tonite to see how well these work ...... aw shucks .......

Looks like I've created to FISIHSTEINS. What monsters, going out fishing like that and not telling their inventor. Shame on you guys. Now I know why no one wanted to join me at A&W. My creations don't like me any more. ( Actually I'm jealous. )

Was out from about 5:30 til 10 last night (Wed.) brought in one cat between 32 - 34 inches ( took a rough guess using my rod). My 1st fish busted me off after a long battle , 2nd was even briefer one run and the fly came sailing back at me , 3rd fish took off up stream buried it self under a rock and I had to bust it off myself ( smart fish). All were taken on my version of the UV Clouser that Cane and I have been fooling around with . Made some additions to it and they seemed to like it. Man this is just too much fun.........KIM

Was at the the floodway exit at Lockport Thursday afternoon and evening. There were a lot of carp in there. I foul hooked one, but fortunately it shook loose after a moment, but then Gold!
A large shadow was gliding slowly along the shoreline poking arond about a foot offshore in enough water that I couldn't see the bottom. I cast (dropped?) a size 8 Black wooly bugger onto the path and watched my leader closely. It gave a slight twitch and I struck and it was fish on. After 45 minutes ( the 8 wt really couldn't outmuscle this one) I finally got it to shore, and as I was trying to get the fly out of its mouth it shook its head and broke me off. . As it lay there I put my rod up close to try to get a sense of how big it was. With its tail at the butt, It extended beyond the first ferrule which makes it over 32". My first MA carp.
The weird thing was that on several occasions other carp came up and nuzzled against this one. I am assuming they thought she (another assumption) was in the mood. I can hear my wife now-"Is that all guys ever think about??"
There were carp sitting in the shallow riffles where the current was flowing out of the floodway end. I tied on a muddler minnow (only floating flies I had were a popper and muddlers as I forgot the box of drys in the car) with a nymph dropper. I cast to one that was cruising the shoreline and watched it engulf the muddler at the surface. It came up to it at the last. I thought it was going after the nymph at first. It took off like the proverbial rocket, putting me into , maybe 100 feet of my backing. I was kind of wondering how careful I was when I attached the backing. Was it a good knot? any way, eventually landed one that was a smidgeon over 30". I suspect that this has me caught up in the carp fever that has claimed a number of us now.
Oh yeah, also caught three cats 2 x 31", and one about 24", a small sauger, and one LDR goldeye. They were all feeding either on some 1" fry or the things eating the fry.
Met Dave P. new member of the board out there too. Seems a nice fellow. Welcome aboard!
My gosh I get longwinded. I should break this down into about 10 posts!

Thanks RickL glad to be aboard. I was in the floodway trying for carp specifically but to no prevail. Ended up catching a couple of cats and a couple of goldeye. Had a few large fish on for a second not sure if they bit or not. Saw RickL land a couple of nice cats. Wished i stuck around to see your carps for some reason I after them. Well i guess I'll have to try again tommorow.

Hit out there - at the gates last nite. Stephen was enjoying his catch of the day - I was about to try my version of Cane's secret Clouser. Not once But twice ;D ;D ;D #1 - 'GIMME THAT" and steam trained right on upstream. I've never had a line stripper like that before. Naw - can't be heir Acipenser Fulvescens - could it. Mr. Ictalurs Punctatus also goes upstream after a strike sometimes ... but nope .. just wasn't the same hit. Would have been one heck of a Esox Lucius to hit like that....... hmmmm - will never really know - but the beggar snapped my 20lb leader - along with the Clouser Next - lets try the Ally on a scud - HIT - nice soft take - back and forth, in and away from shore - for about a minute before the 12lb tippet went. #2 - Back to Clouser - WHAMMO ! GIME THAT - ga-ZING ...... upstream he (or she) goes. Hey - why's that stick going upstream Thought I early lost the rod in a bunch of pieces - then as the stick in the water swished to one side then the other - I realized the stick is Sir Acipenser Fulvescens - the mighty Sturgeon. [glow=red,2,300]JUMPIN JIMMINIES[/glow] That was the same albino jack rabbit / steam train hit I had earlier. A short while later (sorry - time frame unknown due to adrenalin pumpin) again - the 20lb leader - gone. I was outta Cane's secret clousers Nothing left closely in resemblance - next one I had - I had put dark deer hair on top as a backbone. Took a few solid hits at sundown - before losing it on a rock. Went back to a weighted version of the Ally on a straight hook. Tugs, slurps and fouls were all the carp would muster. They really started porposing just before sundown - needed one of Will's bread crumbs to try ..... but the pelicans were about by then too. Called it a day just shy of 10pm. Had to go confirm the stick (pg. 45 of Freshwater Fishers of MB) - saw a good 8-10" of the stick Yup - that WAS the same albino jack rabbit - best known as Mr. Sturgeon. Neither 20lb leader I lost last night was frayed - but snapped. OK - the 8wt can handle it - but the fish was a tad overpowering. On tehfirst hit - I thought I was going to loose the rod. But the second hit ......... Not one fish to a net - but one heck of a night. I was shaking the whole drive home - kinda still jiggered about it. Sturgeon on the fly ....... YEOWZER ;D

I was there after the first strike. I would have thought that was it for the night, but again!!?!! I left WAY too early again. Big congrats on the sturgeon Darryll!
My one great landing of the night was a 20 - 24" pike. First pike on the fly, but as it is with all of them, it was exciting.
A basic bait pattern yellow bucktail on top, white bucktail on the bottom, bead chain eyes, black thread, no other weights. Tied so the hook point is up, using a standard down eye streamer hook.
I only had the one, and I lost it when a helpful bait caster came over to try and help me. He grab the leader, and the hook ended up in its mouth. Usually I am against leaving hooks in a fish, but I didn't have any gloves, and didn't want to start sticking my fingers near a pikes mouth.
Gave an impromptu fly-fishing lesson to a bunch of young guys that were out last night. I think they were from a Hutterite colony. They were all impressed with the notion of tying your own flies.

Okay someone post a pic of the "not so bloody secret clouser"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! well ... if Acipenser Fulvescens hadn't run off with the only ones I had .... and these ones were ...... modified ;D Would have been better to land it for a pic - or at least got it closer .... gives me a reason to go see Stu about a 10wt (would that even be enough) .... or should I pick up an oak 4x4 instead ? I'd like to say I'll steer clear of them in the future, but I was casting to the holes for kitties and he was ... there Hadn't I seen the stick - I would have left it for a kittie going uptown for grub - not common, but happens. RB - white clouser - add eyes, (add modification L243E9aD). Add tail - half tail hair from top - half from bottom - when tying tail in - use 1 -12" strand pearl crystal flash - fold it in half 3 times (snip the loops) - tie on top of tail. Leave hair from tail to wrap around body when tying in (partially covering mod L243E9aD). Add top wing of white hair - add small topping of yellow hair with 1 strand pearl crystal flash. Add bottom hair - you guessed it - one strand pearl ..... ooops - looks I forgot the second secret ingredient ......... Oh yeah - and you gotta talk to the fish. When I shut up - nothing was biting. Call them in - talk about the weather ....

So it's around 4:30 friday afternoon , I read the post's start drooling , give Sir Carp a call find out he's out on the river , hunting for Strugeon . So I had no choice I , packed up my gear and off I go to lockport , no sign of the elusive Sir Carp , well I'm not going hunting for him so off I go down to the river , first cast el snaggo , second cast ....." hmmmm" big weight .....yep it's a kittie, many good head shakes and long runs later I bring in a nice 33 inch cat , confrimed by dano and company , who showed up later and measured my rod for me. stayed til about nine and in that time there were six sauger or so (lost count after the 1st one) two snagged cats, about six on with good battles that I lost and my biggest to date yet a 35 inch kittie cat. Not a bad day and oh yaeh I never did find Sir Carp but I think I have a good idea where he moight have been.....KIM

Well for the sturgeon Darrell go out and do it again. I can honestly say if you are the first to land one on a fly you will become world famous whether you want to or not. I would love to see someone do it. I did manage to get out yesterday to the Red with my son Kevin. Fished from 7:00 untill 3:00 with not to much to show for it. Kevin had 3 hits and landed a small cat on a size 10 mayfly nymph. I had 5 hits and landed 1 small Drum. It was way to hot but the company was worth the trip. It has really slowed. I only saw 3 Cats landed by the bait guys in the boats.
