The other thread is gettin a little thick so here is the sequel Got to Lockport around 4:30 as I drove over the floodway on 59 i saw it was bone dry so I figured the floodway would be a bust. I waded the east shore casting as I went but every where I stood eventually behind me a group would show up with bait tubs and lawn chairs. So I kept moving. A few hits but even the boats weren't getting many fish (i saw 2 boats one fish each) I got as far as the first sand bar north and found some carp but they just laughed at me. So I packed it in and headed out to the floodway around 7ish. No water going over but some coming from "under" so there was some current (and hardly any other fishers) Got about 25 goldeye (some of the coveted MA size ) 3 sauger 1 white bass (we called them silver bass back east so imagine my glee to find out people here can catch 5-10lb silver bass but I got a "straightening out" real good on that one a while back) As I moved to those delicious looking rapids a gentleman came up behind me and introduced himself as Gerry/Gary Beck he had come down to check the water levels and was wishing he had brought a rod (if you see him before I do again tell he should have) I cast into the riffles while he watched and got a swing and a miss from a cat but before Mr Beck was at the top of the hill i was into a cat. All in all I got 8 cats there with one very pretty juvenile 2 25"ish fish that jumped and fought like a salmon (very cool) and I broke my 30" cat barrier and the much coveted MA barrier with a 37" cat (what a fight!!) If i remember the cat tally was 1) juvy, 2) 25ish" ,1) each31", 33", 35", 36" ,37" When the cloud cover came in and block what was left the sunset and the nearly full moon the cat bite shut off. But at one point I would release a fish, pick another pocket in the riffles and hook another. All told a 37 fish night not the 150 fish day that Stu talks about but if you don't count the time i wasted fishing the main river 37 fish in 3ish hours is an pretty good ratio..at least to me. Gary ya should have brought your rod and Darrell you shouldn't have stayed at work. BTW the debate as to which fight s harder carp or cats has been muddied again but i WILL say that those cats really know how to use the current.

Just got back from a round of g*lf. One of the people in our foursome just happened to be a Fly Fisher who just moved here from out west. ya never know where your where your going to meet another Fly Fisher. Of course I told him about the fly fishing sites around here and the kitty fishing at Lockport. Of course he said he was perty much a Trout fisher Oh well I guess we're just going to have to spoil that for him are'nt we cane ;D It's funny how people lose thier tunnel vison so quickly once they tag into some Red river Salmon and those huge Golden Trout ;D ;D ;D ;D. I think I'll try the Floodway tonite if the weather isn't to wet.

Lol- well just to stir things up:) I must admit the Carp thing is very challenging- much more so than creek trout( barring the Stauffer in Alta and The Pine when she,s in a bad mood) There just seems to be so little solid FF,ing info on behaviour/tactics/seasonal patterns of movement etc etc. Most folks seem to catch them by chance while seeking other species- so exploring something relativley unexplored is fun and keeps the interest up:)))) From my galavanting around the net- we may actually be at the vanguard of big river/big lake Carp FF,ing right here in Mb. Purpously setting out to catch them on a fly has certainly rekindled my interest in experimental tying/ rethinking tactical approaches and best of all provided a great excuse for buying a whole slew of new gear:))) The Cat thing is fun though seems more predictable and more of a slug fest battle. All that said- Lockport/The Floodway is disgusting - the amount of debris in the water and on the banks is just plain unsafe and the treatment of fish that I have witnessed- nothing short of barbaric- from purposly trying to snag fish to tossing them in the bushes to rot to seeing how far one can toss them out into the water and on and on. True enough i,ve only fished Lockport and the Floodway this year ( 9-10 trips) and had some sucess/ and from my posts obvious excitement at trying out new things, but the human created situation there really has been wearing down my desire to continue fishing there. I agree there are world class size fish to be caught, but seeking them in an environment that is a world class sport fishing embarrasment makes the size and number of the fish simply moot for me. Hmmms maybe its a good thing those responsible are contained there where hopefully they can be dealt with/educated and not frequenting the "other spots" ))))))

Just a thought, but I was thinking of taking a garbage bag next time. The "inch an hour two feet a day" ideology. What are everyone's thoughts?
Idealistic waste of time or might do some good?
We certainly do not want our fellow fishers feeling as Cane has described when is it abundantly clear we all love the fishing there.
I will be away until the 10th so you no posts for a while.
Cheers Fellows.

I'm the golfer from Alberta..My comment was that in Alberta there are plenty of lakes and streams with some mighty big fish. Ive wrestled with 12 pound browns, 20 plus pound large lakers, some very big and tough rainbow. Some mighty fine cutthroat. I had the advantage of fishing alot of backcountry lakes and rivers in the National Parks and some provincial parks throught out the province and always came back very satisfied. I do hope to latch on to some big fish here in Manitoba and it was a great pleasure to meet Caddisguy and look forward to having the opportunity to expereince the excitement I heard in his voice about the fishing here in Manitoba

Cane I know it is not your thing but I agree with Dan if we all took a safeway bag of garabage each time it would help (and be extremely good karma)

Welcome aboard Tintrader. ;D We have a number of people in the MFFA and here that are both avid Fly fishers and Golfers. I think we should arrange a Fin and Skin game to the Winnipeg River and Piniwa g*lf course. Some of us have done this in the past and it makes for a wonderful day trip. I'm sure with your knowledge of the Alberta back country would be of great interest to everyone in this site. So have some great <(((((>< ing in our province and don't forget to post .

Unfortunately there isn't a safeway bag large enough to pack up some of the losers who have made it such a mess. Let's get rid of them with their garbage

Lol- Walleye- hmmms had,nt though of putting the offenders in bags and piling them up out of the way- is that still illegal in Mb??? ))) Robert- your right -I dont like cleaning up someone elses mess ( who does?) But i,m more than willing to do so and have done in a number of circumstances when there are the neccessary things in place, to at least - support that effort over the longer term .While i,m a great advocate of grassroots action, I think its also realistic that to have a long term effect , you also need the support of , in this case municipal/sport fishing /conservation authorities. to target the problems with an educational and punative strategy that turns the statement of cleaning the place up into a long term change.

I like the idea of a scheduled day of cleaning.
I have noticed in the past groups of people cleaning up near the locks under the supervision of corrections officers. It does get cleaned up, although it may be once a year.
Maybe for the next Thursday night meeting, we all bring one Safeway bag, and fill it with junk. Some of us (or all of us) also bring a couple of big garbage bags, and whoever has one of the autobin's in their back yard can drop it off there, drop it off in one of the garbage cans at Lockport, or if some are really industrious, they can sort out the mono, and put it in the recycle bins at the hole.
I would be in favour of this. When I fish, I usually have my blue tote bin with me, and usually pick up whatever hazardous tackle is about. I don't tend to pick up garbage, but as Rob indicated, if we each do a little (and one Safeway bag of garbage isn't much at all), we all benefit hugely. It could also have the unforeseen benefit of making us more approachable by like-minded fisherman and encourage them to start a dialog with us.

Fished the floodway on the south side at the riffle just before it meets the Red in the morning on July 2. It was an amazing experience!
I could see carp, drum, and catfish swimming up through the riffle. Managed to get 5 cats from 30 to 35 inches, a 24 inch drum, and 1 suicidal 6 inch goldeye. All of them were caught in about one or two feet of water just above the riffle.
The carp, however, blanked me.
What are your theories on what those cats are doing in the shallow riffles? I was talking to Stu at the store and he theorized they were feeding on small minnows - likely silver bass fry. Any other ideas?
I got most of mine on smaller white streamers with silver flashabou. (One cat and the goldeye came on a white nymph with a silver flashback.) Rob, what did you have your success with?

...... is that still illegal in Mb??? ))) We all seem to agree - nobody likes cleaning up after others ... yet we do .... but ... enuf on that clean-up topic. For those that do - GREAT - for those that don't - nothing against you. Tintrader - welcome along. There's rumors to trout bodies abound - streams as well. Just 'cuz you're out here - don't dismay .... My favor is the trout as well - but .... can't close other possibilites out . .. . RB - ....... for the work comment Now - I'm looking at Thurs out there ...... Stephen noted hisself as well. Anyone else ? ? ? ? ? My new flies are dry from this weekend and need to be put to use.

I will assume with the floodway not flowing that it will be by the locks (at least that is where I will start)

Scaleson and I headed up on, I think, Tuesday night. There was little current at the floodway exit. I caught a couple of goldeye, a couple of drum, and a couple of sauger. Foul hooked a carp scale (one of several carp I had a short connection to). There were a number of carp there, but did not really get into one.
Scaleson had something big for oh so brief a time before it broke off. He also had some goldeye too.
Ran into Caddisguy before leaving. The bugs were not anywhere near as bad as at Hayes Lake.
