I found mr. wiskers! Caught a decent cat, just over 30". Felt REALLY weird when he was fighting, like he had a direct pull on my line like it was attached to the bumber of a car. I was pretty surprise when i landed him tail first!!! I had acctually gaffed him back by his tail and dragged him in backwards. He seemed to have a darn good fighting advantage like that. Anyways, my brother came out, gave a few casts but did not have waders on so couldn't get out to where they were rising. I hooked another on my first case after landing the last one, I was being called up the river bank by a familiy menber, so I gave my rod to my brother, he played it well into the backing for about 10 minutes until finally he took a hard run, my brother palmed the reel and snappo, gone! All in all a great evening, warm, calm, ahh, not too many days like today left.

I know you are not in a hurry to tell us what spot you are tagging these cats (i haven't seen one in a while ) But what fly are you using? And in what kind of water are you getting them? Shallow/deep current/slow/slack water? ?

Pipecleaner body/maraboo tail, plastic beadheaded woolybugger, bright colors that can be seen in the murky water, no scent. Slow water, almost no current, cats come up to edge of rock shelf on edge of channel to feed at sundown. I think they are feeding on crayfish. You can see them rising, sometimes splashing their tails. I have had success using a 5' length of 8lb test, (last night I used 14lb) no tappered leader, floating line and a #8, 9' rod. Cast to where you think the edge of the channel is, let it sit for a minute or 2. Strip SLOW, one foot at a time, pause for 5-10 seconds in b/w. If they are rising cast at the rings, and then do the above. I have had more success catching large Cats using this technique in the last couple of weeks than I have had using bait in the last 20 years. I have caught 8, and my brother 1, all >24", most around 30-34! ;D Not sure why its working so well. Right place? Right time? Right color? Not sure.
