Fished the Red River by boat about a week ago. It was hot and we there from about 8 AM 'til 6 PM. Caught a few goldeye on a dry fly; they were rising by one of the pillars of the upstream bridge to East Selkirk.
The most entertainment came when we noticed some carp, about 10 lbs. each, lolling about about 10 feet from shore on a mud flat where Cooks Creek enters. One was particularly accomodating; it had its nose down and its tail up right through a couple fly changes and several not-so-accurate casts.
Finally, I put a peacock hearl nymph with bead chain eyes and grey marabou for a wingcase and tail not too far from its nose. I almost crapped myself when he sucked it in and the line came tight. Actually, I probably would have crapped myself but he came off after a run of about 6 feet.
I wonder if those carp there are a regular thing? I also wonder if shore access is possible around the mouth of Cooks Creek? It sure would be convenient to stalk them for a couple hours without having to launch the boat.
I should also mention that I probably spent 2/3 of my time on the river soaking cut goldeye with my baitcasting outfit for cats but was totally blanked in that department.
