At the locks last night and wow the water was low. The tree was on dry land and i could walk to almost the 1/2 way point (well past the 1/3 point anyway). But casting to that water didn't get too many fish. Casting back east got lots of 10-14" Goldeye, some real nice weight/fighting Sauger, some nice eater sized Walleyes (if i would eat a fish outta that river...flush) and hooked a couple nice cats, landed one lost a much bigger one. Can't seem to get much past the 30" mark but those guys put up enough of a fight to bring to hand.

Help! I have not had any success with goldeye at this time other than one (1) LDR. What have you done right that has led to your success?

My success ?? 2 words Dumb Luck ;D In a nut shell i would say the flys i chose. We can all cast to some degree, pick and read water so as a newbie to fishing the Red i won't call myself qualified. The most effective flys (even when there is a hatch on) for me are streamers. Smallish (#6), bead head or bead chain, marabou, in yellow, grey or the most successful and of course i only had one (made from the leftoevers) grey and yellow together over a red floss body (but i am gonna tie some up with silver or flashabou bodies). The beauty with them is they get the Goldeyes and the Sauger but have got me most of my Cats and Drum this year. NB the goldeye seemd to like a lighter tippet then you might use on the cats so....... Last night i tested out my new Cat flys they are bigish and heavy so lots of fun to cast didn't get but one hook up on a cat and lost the predictabled number on snags but the the sauger and goldeye i got were all on the larger size for their weight class (one gold eye was huge) But for me and the bait dudes it was a slow night. Except for the regulars fishing the ladder but it was slow by their standards. By the way there was this guy trying to take a 30+' cat home many ppl tried to tell him not to so i got on the wifes cell that i brought as he watched me and then put the poor near dead creature back. But i found out that the CO's for that area don't work after hours on weekends. If I understood the lady correctly. What is up with that?
