Waded into the Red at about 6:45 pm this evening and had a monster strike, just one strike and just one fish. After a strong run I thought I lost him beacause it felt like I had the bottom for a few minutes, then slack..... then bzzzzzzzzzzzz, into the backing again. This one got out into the middle and just sat there for long periods like a big anchor. Finally, well in to the dark I landed him. I was having trouble sizing him up as he was splashing around a bit and it was dark, but he was b/w34-36 inches. Biggest Cat I have caught. Not sure about the weight, I never like to hook that thing through their lips. Anyone have any idea what this thing might have weighed? It was'nt fat, but moderatly bellied.
I'm I just fluking out? B/C is seems my luck on the fly is better than it used to be when I fished here with pickerel rigs and bait. Not for quantity of fish, but for size. (must be that horseshoe in my waders )

I'd have to say its your luck on the 34/36" cat. Although I'm hearing lots of cats 26-30" range - over the keeper limit - your tag of a 36 incher sounds great. Great to hear the flies catching bigger than other means. On a same note - cats - I had my first taste of it yesterday beer-batter & deep fried - man was it great ;D

I'm sure it was luck. Never hurts to have a bit of that once in a while when you go out. I'm happy because catching a couple of lunkers has given me a great introduction to fly fishing in the Red. I must say that I went out 3 or 4 times previous to this and got nothing, so I was starting to wonder about using flies in the river, but now I see that not only is it possible, its a lot of fun, and can be very productive.
By the way, what does Cat taste like?

;D [glow=red,2,300]Chicken[/glow] ;D
And I'm not yanking your chain either. White meat, texture darned near identical to chicken breast. I nearly went out last night to tag myself one. Wife took me out for lunch yesterday - took her a piece. She's not a fish eater by any means - but she liked it too. I'm surprised at it - often wanted to try it, never had the nerve (I know, I know - they are just too ugly to taste good).

What I am trying to say is that any experience you have had with fishing will help you in fly fishing. And any experience you have fishing place "a" will help fishing place "b"! First time i went to the red at Lockport i caught fish, the second time I caught alot of fish and a few times later i caught some big fish. I joked at the time it was just dumb luck and to a degree it was but also i have fished some simliar waters and applied that knowledge to the Red. i) Lockport is alot like any tailwater fishery. Like the Shand damn ii) the Red is a big river like the Grand river back where I come from. iii) the lower Grand is a permanently stained water (green rather than red) so bright flies worked well there for the steelhead, salmon, walleye and pike and work well here for the walleye, sauger, goldeye drum and cats. iv) the multiple eddys and back currents reminded me of fishing the whirlpool on the Niagara river for salmon and steelhead. You knew where the fish were, you knew their habits but instead of worms or chicken livers you threw a fly. Big fish come with all the above ingredients, alot of time on the water and maybe a smidge of "luck" but now we are in a circle...see above I will say that Fly Guy's story is the reason i started this board. 1. curious about fly fishing 2. checks out fly fishing board 3. buys fly rod 4. listens to stories about the fishing and asks questions.....everyone contributes 5. goes out and catches monster fish 6. next time someone new shows up on this board he will contribute to help the new guy along. good stuff guys rb
