I made or stumbled (depending on ones point of view) on this fly last winter. Only after a few ties and fishing it successfully did I find out I had it all wrong I had great success with this fly with walleyes being strangely attracted to it and the basic designed is Hornbergesque. On the Discovery Channel (after my success with this fly) I found out that fish can't see red. I do not know whether they see red as another colour or if it is invisible to them. Either way it works. It started with this dyed hen saddle that said to me "you can do something with this" 1. Start thread on an 2/0 saltwater hook 2. Tie in some bead chain eyes 3. Tie in some Floss (in this case I am using emerald green) 4. Wrap it forward 5. Some Tinsel 6. Two matching Blue Dun dyed Chinese cape hackle tips tied on the opposite sides of the shank 7. Our Dyed Hen Cape 2 matching feather tips on either side of the shank 8. Some stiff dry fly hackle that can maybe move a bit of water

Pretty cool, Rob... I think it's a flyfisher's version of a Len Thompson 5 of Diamonds spoon!!! Which is yellow and red for you purists out there!!!

Interesting Though from my readings and experience I am convinced that the RedDevil or 5 of Diamonds paint job side is to catch the fisherman and the flash and vibration catches the fish.

Looks good to me...
Have you ever tried fishing for smallmouth with one of these? Looks to me like it could be deadly...
James.

When I first tied this I was really thinking pike but I can't remember but 1 hammer handle that hit it. A coupla good smallies (and I think in certain pools that contain all 3 the smallies hit it first) but the walleyes really seemed to like it.
There is another fly style that I use that is famous for being a smallie killer that doesn't get numbers of walleyes but when the smallies in the area have had enough of it (or if I change to this) then a bigger walleye in the area will suprise me.
