I love simple effective flies but I hate 20 names for them just because the thread is a different colour or the body is a different material. So here is a simple pattern that can have all the materials altered an remain basically the same fly. I am using a #6 1x Nymph hook Wind on the thread Tie in your tail material in this case I am using fluff from white saddle hackle. Tie in some copper wire for ribbing Tie in your Body material It can be chenille, cross cut rabbit, dubbing loop or what ever your heart wants. In this case I am using White Estaz. Wind forward the thread and tie in the bead chain eyes with figure 8 wraps Wind forward the material all the way then 2 thirds of the way back and then forward again. You are trying to create a conical minnow shape. When you get to the eyes do a cross or punch wrap around them (depending on the eyes size, the fly size and material width) At this point I realized that the estaz was too big for a #6 Bring forward the ribbing Tie off I also clipped the Estaz to shape it better But with chunky Chenille it works better. Someone thought the brown made it looked like a Gomphus. In black it looks snail like. And dub looping some DD brown with stiff hackle fibers as a tail Basically the same recipe creating a variety of results.

Gotta love the simplicity... But still very fishy.

Robert; The Hole has Salmon iron with up turned looped eyes. The nice thing with the salmon hooks is they are heavier (and sink faster) and the eye design gives you a nice place to attach dumbbell eyes.

I have been using salmon hooks for a while they are supper strong (and you need something serious to pinch those barbs down) I was thinking along the lines or short shank up eye nymph hooks. But I will give these a try on the salmon hooks

When it comes to the salmon hooks, I always pinch the barbs at the tying table, just because it is very difficult to do them with hemostats waterside. Good point.

They stay in the box better with barbs so I pinch them down after I tie them on the line/tippet (also a good way to know if it has been fished before) but with the salmon iron I had to carry a leatherman style tool to get those barbs down as the wimpy hemostats couldn't do it...till I got my Dr Slick hemos
