My husband is hunting with "the boys" again this year. I got him into it and now I'm excluded. Is anyone interested in going with me Nov 12 to Spruce Woods? It'll just be a day trip but all day. Erika

Erika: That's an outrage ! Sounds like Hubby needs a little tune-up on how his recreational priorities should play out! Sorry I can't take you up on your offer. If I get out on the 12th, it will be with my son and we hunt in the Whiteshell. Hope you find a partner....TIM

Thanks Tim. I'll need help hauling a big ole' buck into the truck. I'm a good and careful hunter and pretty much can guarantee getting one as I know the area quite well and score opening day every year. Hopefully I have someone take me up on the offer. Erika

Good news and bad.
Bad: I got winded by too many deer to get a good shot. The darn wind kept swirling around me in all directions. I may go again on the weekend. The husband got one so far so perhaps not. The freezer may already be full enough.
Good: It was a beautiful day to be alone in the woods and I saw a wolf!! About 20 feet away before it spotted me. It was AMAZING!! Truly made the trip worthwhile. I also saw a grouse, a great grey owl, a coyote, and a fox. I love sneaking around in the woods. Erika

Hey Erika: That's why they call it "hunting" and not "shooting" My son and I had the perfect day on Monday: sunny, light wind and the deer cooperated. He wasn't on stand for five minutes before I heard a shot from his direction. He hailed me on the walke-talkie and said two words: "Buck....down". That was my cue to come over with the skinning knife! Before I went back to my stand, I told him to fill my tag as well if he had the chance. An hour later, I called him on the walkie-talkie, only to be told, curtly, that I had woken him up! However, 15 minutes later, another shot and another deer down - a nice little spike buck! We hunt quite a ways from the road, so we spent the better part of the day getting our animals out, skinning, etc. Sunny and +10C makes it a pretty enjoyable chore. I hunt in the Whiteshell and one of the things I have started to do is to bring out some suet to hang near my blind. I'm always amazed at how fast the whiskey jacks and chickadees find me and then provide a little avian entertainment. With venison now hanging, I guess all that's left is to wait for the hard-water season. Getting pumped for fly-tying makes sense (a cozy, indoor winter activity) but I can't believe I'm actually looking forward to ice fishing ;D...TIM

Sounds like a great day for you and your son. I'm still planning another trip out. Personally i like the hunting/sneaking best. The rush of seeing a deer you're about to shoot is bonus. I'm kind of sad when I do tag because it means waiting another year. You know, I may just start packing a camera instead, at least on the second tag trips. I think I'll borrow the idea of attracting birds. Every time I go I learn something. What not to do next time, different habits of various wildlife, different plants that grow in MB, what poison ivy looks like in the winter, etc. I love being in the woods. Erika
