for information - became aware that MEC of which I was a member, in an article in the July/August issue of Western Sportsman magazine, admitted that they are opposed to hunting and fishing, and have in the past supported organizations that are against those sports. The article is by one of the editors who contacted the communications manager for MEC. If that is the organization's stance, so be it - however, I think it only fair that they would be up front with it, and post that policy in their stores and on their website so people can make an informed decision as to membership. They are quite prepared to sell clothing to hunters and fishermen for profit, they just don't think there is any place for sports that kill animals or fish. I have asked them to cancel my membership and refund my share (probably zero chance of that I'm sure as the share is undoubtedly non-refundable). If posting a link to the article is allowed, here it is: www.westernsportsman.com/content/view/139/137/

Thanks for bringing that to our attention. I knew about their anti-hunting stance but I didn't know they were so kooky as to be opposed to fishing, too! Given their position on two of my passions, I have never done business there and, if it doesn't change, never will....TIM PS. and, compared to the Cabelas, no-hassle return policy, my buddy had a terrible time returning a set of raingear that leaked. Instead of just taking him at his word, the clerk 1) accused him of sweating too much and then 2) tank-tested the gear!

Great to know. Was thinking of a membership. Now I don't have to make the trip. Thanks.

Thanks, Randy. I haven't been keen on MEC generally anyway (difficult access, prices bigger than I would expect for a 'co-op', and staff that don't seem to know the product); but this helps confirm my decision.
I am head over heels with Wholesale anyway....

Very good to know, Randy... Thanks for the heads-up and helping us all be more informed.

Received an email from MEC stating their regrets "I felt that way" - they are sending a form which will allow me to recover my share.

Given that, when it's all said and done, my venision probably costs about $10/lb, a MEC membership refund wouldn't go that far!
