Anyone ever fished at the trout pond at Deacon's corner? It is an operation called "catch-a-rainbow" which is run out of the backyard of a car dealership known as F&L Enterprises. The pond is of a donut structure, which allows fishing from the center island, and is chock-full of rainbow trout. The downside of the arrangement is that, on top of a small admission price, you are supposed to keep what you catch and pay by the inch. I know this would not be many of yours "cup-of-tea", but after venturing out there twice last winter, and pulling one hundred rainbows through the ice the first time, and around seventy the second time, I figure it would be a darn nice spot to bring that pathetic first timer that can't entice the dumbest of stocked trout on a typical lake, or a youngster who needs some encouragment when learning the art of the fly...o yeah, and make sure your hooks are barbless, so that you can facilitate the fish slipping away quitely, while your pocket book breathes a sigh of relief. I have no problem with some "pay to fish" places like Garson but any place that is in the business of selling fish but hiding behind fishing is a place i will stay away from. I have heard people say they have gotten bored fishing there as there is no challenge!!! The trout fishing at Garson is good with out being a slam dunk and you don't have to buy the fish but the option is open! Does garson have some ponds open in the dead of winter. Maybe for a warm spell in march?? rb

I would definitely not call this particular style of fishing 'boring', I would prefer to refer to it as busy and lacking challenge. Garson - It is virtually impossible to keep an outdoor waterbody open in the "dead" of winter, but as you inquired, he does have ponds open in March some years. I have made the effort to get there just after ice out for a few years now, because the Char seem to be quite active and every hooligan in Southern Manitoba hasn't pestered those fish yet. The earliest I have fished there on open water, although only the three nearest ponds were open, was on March 19, 2000, and he has likely had them open quite a bit earlier. He has all sorts of tricks to open the ponds up; pumping water ontop the ice, aerating, etc., but if the weather doesn't co-operate, well you know. Last year on April 12, he had only one pond completely open, and several others partially. We were actually ice fishing on a pond, and fly/spin fishing on another (19 degrees). The fish were far more active under the blanket of ice. Have you tried there, Robert, I didn't notice it in your provided fly fishing journal. Anyone else have much luck out there?

I have a hard time with pay-in-my-pond fishing - when there are other waterbodies out there - yet haven't totally ruled it out. Never heard of the pond at Deacon's Corner - not as much interested for myself - although, like you said Aaron, would be great to get a kid going on ffing. Since the oh-so-brief hook up my son had with the brown at Reynolds, he's paying quite the attention to my ffing ... escapades. Any contact #'s for this place ? I'd not mind at least to hear them out on $$$ and rules. Gotta get out - one..... . . . more .. .. . ... ... ..... .. time..... ;D

Have you tried there, Robert, I didn't notice it in your provided fly fishing journal. Aaron Wiebe That was last years journal so i am in the middle of doing this years as soon as i am sure it is done! I am also in the middle of writing a story on my first cat on the fly which starts off with a trip to Garson just ahead of a thunderstorm. I was there for the big pike Stu told me about and maybe some of the other MA fish that he has there. Well i got skunked on the pike (to be fair pike and bass don't like pre-front BP drops) but the trout do! so i hit those trout ponds and caught a bunch. Nice enough place & people but the day i was there some yahoos who had been drinking showed up and kind of ruined the outting for me. But I'd go back as it is mostly families and people looking to catch fish. And if there is open water in March........... rb

Hey Darrell Here is what I know, and this information has not been verified since last winter...
F & L Enterprises - "Catch-a-Rainbow" 224-4484 About one km North of Deacon's corner, on the West Side of the road (Highway 207). Look for the sign and a used light trucks dealership. Kids Free $5 per Adult Catch and Keep $0.35 per inch (up to 15" fish) $o.75 per inch (beyond 15" fish)

Being a "pathetic first timer" I would welcome any opportunity to learn how to cast and catch anything!!! --- even if it's in a stocked pond and have to pay by the inch! I have never fly-fished before and catching anything would be a bit of morale boost. I know most of you guys are pretty good at this stuff, but think back to when you first picked up a fly rod, and give us beginners a break. Al

Hi! Welcome to the sport and the board. Stick with us and we'll have you onto fish before too long (I am only going crazy waiting for open water and warmer temps). There is a desire for the board members to get together and we would welcome you to come out .

GOOD NEWS
A couple buddies and I went out to the good ol' pond today for the heck of it, and got 6 nice rainbows ( ~13" ).
So, if there was any winterkill, it wasn't major... ;D
Just gotta wait for iceout and hope weather/fish cooperate for a get-together:D
