Well, during my inaugural trip to Wholesale Sports I naturally checked out the fishing section and went thru the stack of fly rods piled in rack. I found a somewhat rare commodity: 10' 9/10 wt rod - there are lots of 10' rods in 5/6/7 wt and lots of 9', 9wt out there, but the 10', 9/10 wt is a fairly rare beast, in my experience I can't remember the model number offhand but it's an IM6 graphite and I was attracted to the price: $100.00.
I'm still a single-handed ffer and I have found that my 9 ft 9/10 wt (Sage) just doesn't doesn't cut it with heavier presentations, especially the kind of stuff I sometimes use for pike and catfish. In chatting with Stu, he recommended that the extra foot of rod would make a big difference.
I have to agree. The rod handles well, tho I think that I need a larger reel to balance it out properly. I would not call it a great rod but it's length and relatively fast action fills a void for the kind of fishing I do. I definitely notice the difference against the 9 ft - it has a significantly heavier feel and I have to slow down my casting - but having said that, it gets the heavy stuff out quite well. I was casting with a 10 wt line (pike/musky WF) taper to which I had added up to five feet of lead-core sink-tip - which will bog down my 9 ft rod pretty quickly. Casts up to 70 ft were just fine. Past that I the rod was getting a little wobbly and I was using more arm than was comfortable. Without the heavy sink-tip, longer casts with a weighted fly were just fine.
And, lucky me, I tied into some cats and big drum this weekend and it handled fish very well. No real surprise there.
Unfortunately it is a two piece and does not come with a case, only a sock - hey it was only $100.00, remember?! It has a small fighting butt which I like.
Overall, a decent, workmanlike outfit that fills a need (honest, dear, it's a NEED not a WANT!!) at a modest price....IMHO...TIM
PS. Stu would know about availability of this and other Streamside rods. One that he let me try last week when we fished at Lockport- it was a 9' 8/9 wt if I am not mistaken (Stu please correct me if I have it wrong) was a beaut. It felt like a very expensive outfit, but at more of a lunch-bucket price. I have absolutely no need for that one, but it'll go on the Christmas list.
