Hi. Bob Sopuck, brother of Tim here. Just had to sign in and get involved in some of the vibrant and productive discussions I've been following. By way of background, I've been fly fishing since I was 16 and was, at that tender age, one of the founding board members of the MFFA. I work for the Delta Waterfowl Foundation and am the hunting columnist for the Winnipeg Free Press. I live S. of Riding Mtn. Nat Park on a small farm (about 35km E of Patterson Lake) and, in my off hours, am President of FLIPPR, the aeration and lake development folks. I love to cast for trout in our pothole lakes but also fly fish for anything that swims, especially pike. Patterson Lake is my "baby" (FLIPPR's first lake!) and I see/visit/fish it about twice a week. I'm intensely interested in the "catch and release" /lake management debates and have a few thoughts on those important topics. Oh yeah, I'm also a fisheries biologist by trade. Great to be here among friends. Lots of wisdom on this board and I'm looking forward to picking some up!

Well it's about time you showed up at the Board ;D I sent several e-mails to you with no reply. I was rounding up quest s for our thursday nite chats this winter and wanted you to come on and talk to us a little about FLPPR. We had Ken on for one of our first chats this winter. I see Randy posted in the C&R thread so that's 2 responses now from the Parklands . We have not had a lot of input into these discusions from the Parkland area I quess because the area resiidents seem to feel threatened in some way by the word "release". It seems that when I talk to local people about a lake with C&R and a closed season that this will some how cover all stolked trout Lakes. I think what we are lobbying for is " a" lake that is C&R and a closed season so that there is a benchmark lake that can be used by fisheries as a test lake to prove or disprove these managment tools. If all the lakes are the same no knowledge can be obtained. I think Paterson is the perfect lake for that because it has no other species in it right now and I think it is a lame excuse to say that we can only put C&R regs on new lakes. If you don't have the closed season like we have with stolked trout streams ..... by the way lobbied for by the MFFA and covers the entire province.....then the whole discusion of a C&R fisherie in the Parkland area is of no point. < (((((>< ><))))):<

Thanx for the kind words of welcome, gentlemen. Lots of lively discussions! BTW, if you want to email me my email is at the bottom of my newspaper column which appears every second Sat (next one is July30). Columnists: shameless self-promoters we are! Don't know why I didn't get your emails because I do make a point of replying. I would be delighted to participate in the Thurs nite chats. Why don't we continue the discussion about C+R on the C+R thread? Lots of action there! BTW, C+R issues are all bound up with issues of lake management for the long term as in how do we keep these Parkland trout fisheries, and indeed all our stocked trout fisheries, going strong?
