Hi everybody the fly fishing season is getting a lot closer now. I'm getting the itch badly. It's been a while since i've been on here but I will be on here more often now that spring has finally sprung. we just hope it stays now eh. I made an interesting purchase yesterday from an older gentlemen from killarney. my dad was reading the killarney paper on saturday when he noticed that there was this ad that had a fly rod and reel and a few leaders and flies and a fly line for sale. he was selling the works for 40 bucks. My dad works in killarney so he went and checked it out yesterday and I told him to just buy the whole works. How can you go wrong for 40 bucks. I figured it wouldn't be worth much but what the heck. So when he brought the stuff home I was really suprised to see a brand new rod tube and a brand new fly rod inside of it. He said he used to own a store a while ago and didn't know much about fly fishing and he just wanted to get rid of it. It's an 8 weight Fenwick Feralite by algonquin. It's brand new with the packaging and the stickers still on it. it's 8 1/2 feet long and the model number is ff85B. and inside off this tackle box there was a brand new intrepid rimfly 8 weight fly reel loaded with fly line, backing and leader and everything, and there is 6 brand new berkley no knot leaders. They look really old but they're brand new. And the flies are also new but look fairly old and that's not it there's also an older cortland 333 DT Fly line still in the box. I think I got a pretty good deal for my money. Obviously money wasn't a big deal to him. If this stuff was used it wouldn't be a big deal but I don't think you could find new stuff like this everyday anymore. My question is does anybody know what this stuff is worth brand new nowadays. Especially the rod and reel. It would be interesting to know. I'm gonna keep it for sure I'm just curious. Good Fishin Ryan

Well Ryan it looks like a good deal to me from here.
If the flies look old and old trick is to boil a kettle of water and (using your hemostats not you fingers) hold each fly in the path of the steam. It will bring them back to life.
The leaders hummmmm i won'r trust the fish of a lifetime (or even the day) on leaders i didn't know 100% about (kept out of the light) but they will be fine for goofing around.
The DT will work fine (but a WTF would work better assuming by the reel size it is an 8wt rod)
A well spent $40 in my book!
Is the ice gone from bower or william?

Thanks for the input Robert. When I said the flies were old I meant it looked like they were tied a while ago but they're in perfect shape and they've never been used. Mom and Dad and I were out at william and bower on sunday ice fishing. There's still around a foot and a half of ice at william but it's getting soft quickly. Bower is getting even worse. I was thinking about going out today but I've fell in through the ice once before about 5 years ago and it almost cost me my life so I'm a little cautious when it comes to that kinda stuff. I'm scared enough on good ice let alone sloppy ice. A couple more warm windy days like this and the ice should be gone soon.

Feralite rods were one of the better glass rods produced by Fenwick and are becoming increasingly collectible. I've seen some of the shorter length ones (under 8') go as high as $125 US
Intrepid is I believe a UK based company although Cortland and Leeda did market the Rimfly model as well - don't know in which order though. The reel would be valued at ~$25-30
You did just fine!

lol good one robert. You got me there I wasn't using my head. I know what you mean Bill I did do pretty good. I checked a rod on ebay that was pretty much exactly the same as mine and there was 21 bids on it and it was at 119 US and it was slightly used. that's amazing, and the reel is intrepid and it is a UK reel. I asked a friend through email and he said it's neat to see a real that old still brand new. I took the rod and reel out on the lawn and took a couple casts with it and I love it already. I like fast action rods and it loads pretty fast and it's nice and smooth. I hope that's still considered brand new if I haven't fished with it my question for you guys is what would you do. Would you keep the rod in brand new condition and save it for years to come when there will hardly be any around or would you keep it if you liked it and you could use another rod like myself. I'm gonna use the reel but that's not as big of a deal. I just don't know what to do. you don't get to make decisions like this very often especially for the price I paid for everything. Ryan
