Hi all.
Reading all the interesting posts re the Red makes me think I'd better get out there. Where is the recommended location? Levels low enough to fish the below the damn or is it still advisable to be in the diversion? ... I guess the better question is ... Where is the best fishing?
Interesting clouser pattern ... bigger than I've used before. Should plan to give it a try.

Was out last night started off by fishing below the locks , one sauger. Will and I walked down to the floodway where Stephen was , he had caught a walleye. Then Stephen and I got to watch cane take a catfish on his secret dry fly a 34 inch Master Angler. That was a cool sight indeed. Stephen left around 8:00 and we were joined by Brain and his friend Dave. Not much action as far as the fish were concerned but lots of stuff started coming off the water so Will and I started to catch some bugs( I'll let him tell you all about that) which was alot of fun. Oh yeah We got to see a cat come out of the water not once but three times . Good night had alot of fun and even learned some things.....KIM

lol that was a fun evening:) I guess if one thing is constant about river fishing is that things change and you have to change with them:) The cat was taken on a 14 swimming nymph hook -deer hair winged clipped to an emerger stub/yellow dubbed body ( caddis turned into a hex emerger) there were some big cat rises going on in the floodway sparodic but happening. they were probably hitting the baitfish taking small emergers but that one took the emerger cast out drifted/twitched in the surface film and then pulled down gently, quite the hit:))))))). there were 5/6 mayflies hatching( hex, cahills, little evening yellow duns and more) and e few caddis species coming of as well( little sister sedge and some small unknown ones) . was fun to kneel in the water by pelican island and watch the caddis pop to the surface and fly off. Kim and i waded out at the point by the floodway and watched the mayflies popping up out of the riffle water, riding the surface for a bit and fly off. lol- it doesnt get much more fun that all that:))))
Darrel and Fred sorry i missed you two- and many thanks for the pie left on the windshield - twas yummmy!!!!!!!!!!

Early Morning?
I probably have some time this weekend to hit Lockport and I was wondering if anyone has tried first thing in the morning?
I really don't want to fight (and entangle) the daytime/evening crowds.
Also wondering if the floodway outlet is still a choice spot....TIM

Hey Tim
I was at the outflow of the floodway last Thursday, and there wasn't much activity. The water level is so low that it is trickling over the rocks. There are a couple of holes there, and I saw at least one good size carp stuck there and a couple of cats that were chasing some fry, but that was it. I got skunked, but that doesn't mean much...
One good thing though is the water is very clear coming out of there now. Quite scenic at some points.

yup -thurs nite at lockport it was feet wet at 7:30 ... Stephen was there and doing his bits (when ya left to get your net - I thought you were about to pounce on those gear guys...... ) just the walk - thats all Anyhow - nothing ... not even the esCarpgot would provide prized landing. RB made his presence about 9ish (about time I had to check on sanity of wife in van with wee guy). Went back for a bit - and down at the shallows (on the bend) [glow=red,2,300]YAHOOOOOOOOOO[/glow] First kittie on the fly rod - what a way to break in the new 9wt .... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ok - so it wasn't more than 18 inches - but ...... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Next cast prompted a landing from Mr. Sauger of no great size ...... been a while since I landed one of them - forgot what they hit like. Quiet after that ........ not sure how RB faired ... last comments from him were along the lines of "I'm not going home skunked".... (or something like that). heeeere kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty .........

Weekend report:
Hit the river Saturday am, to beat the crowds and, from 6:00 to 9:00 am, caught 3 cats (biggest: 34") and lost one that I had on for awhile ( I had forgotten just how hard they hit...what a rush!). Saw a couple of fins, but no slashing fish on the surface. The lead 'n meat crowd were catching a few in deeper water. No evidence of carp and the hardware shoresters were catching only the occasional sauger and goldeye.
One was caught on the "inner bank" about 100 m below the locks (d/s side of the big whirlpool) and the rest were on the "outer bank", about 200 m below the locks. All fish were below shallow shoals in 3-4 ft of water. Was using an emerald shiner imitation, clauser style.
From that point on, I wielded a #8 paint brush on the house. Any back casts and I would have tumbled from the ladder.... oh, woe.
RED RIVER CLEAN-UP:
Just as I was leaving, I met up with a crew of volunteers who are part of the group that's taken on the task of keeping the banks litter free (and after seeing how much better the place looks than it did in June, it was a reminder of just how much the comparative cleanliness added to my fishing experience.). They are just a bunch of regular guys (didn't see any gals, but they may be part of it, too), trying to do a good thing.
Anyways, I am going to get their address and send off a $25 donation, just because of their contribution to my enjoyment. I know that the subject of the banks merited a few posts earier this year so I also thought that it would be a nice gesture to roll-up a contribution from the regular Lockport ffers - we could call it a donation from the "Red River Fly Fishers" or some, such thing. If anyone else is interested, I'd be willing to coordinate it, even with a paint-brush in hand. TIM

Sunday - 2:30 to 6pm (or a little after). Hardware - various rendintions of Sir Carpalots esCarpgots, Ally Shrimp (weights, non-weighted, and on #14 scud hooks-weighted), modified clousers, flashy-buggers, zonkers, and various RR style flies. Didn't get around to trying them all - but as it went - the mod'd clousers produced the most. But the most surprising (to me) was the carp on the scud-Alley shrimp - just wasn't expecting it. Mr. Kitty came on clouser as well as the drums. Total - 5 drum, 2 carp, and 1 kitty - but - NOTHING EXCEEDED 18". Sure - size don't matter ... but ........ why all the juniors Is it just the mid-day thick-headed teenagers ignoring their parents lessons, or .... something else. Ohe yeah - and they were all shallow - 3-4 ft of water (or less - dumb drum in 1ft water). darrell,

forgot to mention - fished the clousers (obviously), all Alley-shrimp mixes, esCarpgots, flashy-buggers, and a few RR flies. All too nips or hits. The most productive / most hit fly was the flashy-bugger (olive body, black tail) - but I think the tail was too much (too long). Only a handful of casts came up with no tugs / nibbles.

I'm curious to know why I'm not catching saugers at all when I'm out (I've caught one in six trips over the last two years). I generally use a #1 streamer hook -- the fly doesn't look any larger than the jigs that the shoresters are chucking - and I try to bump my fly along the bottom as much as possible, but I always end up saugerless!...TIM

Hi Guys...it has been a while.
Tim - I've caught sauger with a little more active retrieve and most on a size six stainless steel saltwater streamer hook in various dark over lighter color patterns.

friday evening produced only one big hid after 9:00 pm in kim's spot.....1/3 way across the river out from the rock.....had this cat on for 10-15 min before breaking the 15 lb leader
the casting toward shore in the hole before the rock only procuced miles of line, pic rigs, and weights.....suprised the fish haven't died from the lead
tues evening 7 to 9pm produced a small pike and a white bass at the floodway and the red....using #14 dave's hopper......after 9pm, betwix the two bouys, cane's cat fly had one good hit but I lost it after a few good moments
two or three cats are caught in the floodway pools but probably won't last long as water drops unles someone nets them and lifts to the red

7-9+ last nite - about 150ft of 6lb mono ending up with 2x 1/8oz weights ...... ~30ft 4lb mono with 1/2oz weight and 2 1/2" float - that was about it for successful landings Water level was way down .... island showing up by the wall. Finally made it out there - a couple good rockies (granite I believe) and that was that. But with low waterlevels, you can escape the complete effects of the bucket brigades who weren't enjoying much success either Moved back out to the shallows on the corner. A number of carp were porposing - one beauty - about 26" - even jumped and cleared the water by 1/2 its body height - and about 30ft from me. Played with them - with no successful landings. Hook-ups, a number, landings - 0. The modified clouser and esCarpgot were the beans of choice. Nothing else would get hits As I was sliding my way back to shore - there was a hatch starting. Quite tiny (size 20 and less ) cream colored mayflies. Need to find some .... specimen containers to carry along. hmmmm ......... me thinks me may need carping lessons from Sir Carpalot ....................

Last Weekend:
Fished on the east side last Saturday and Sunday MORNING, (from about 6:00 to 8:30am). I find that the AM fish has much to recommend: It's relatively quiet that time of day and the boats haven't yet had a chance to stir things up. I'm starting to think that morning works better for ffing because fish are still in the shallows after a night of cruising. The only downside is that I haven't yet shared the water with some of you fellow ffers.
On Saturday I caught two (35 and 31) and on Sunday I caught four (34, 33, 33, 30) so it was pretty exciting. All were caught on a clauser style emerald shiner immitation (#1). One fly lasted both days! That has to be a record out there.
Interestingly, the fish were in discrete lies; caught them in the riffle that parallels the shore and west of the small island. On Sunday the water had come back up (after Saturday's wind-tide had drained it) and I was able to fish that west side of the island quite effectively, tho the current is pretty strong. Caught three and lost two more there in an hour, all within an area that was 20 square yards or so.There are big boulders scattered throughout and the fish seemed to by lying in the current and not behind the rocks. The water averages 2-4 feet deep. Over the two mornings, I moved around alot, but only caught fish where there was decent current. Backwaters didn't produce.
While I found the wading a bit of a challenge - but manageable - no one should fish west of the island without a life jacket, in my opinion.
I also didn't see any carp working, either in shallows or out in the river...TIM
