I won't pretend to know all the in's and out's of the politics involved. I think the Parklands and the trout stockings are fantastic and I do like catching trout and I go there as much as I can. My concern is when and if these groups do get acces to the monies that they keep in mind that there are things out there besides fishing for trout. With all the talk about the concerns about lake winnipeg lets face some realties that if lake wpg is in trouble how far behind is our other great lakes and if we don't watch out we might be in serious trouble with our native fish . Now I'm aware that this woudn't be the focus of what these groups are trying to do but if I understand correctly these funds aren't just available for stocjing efforts but also for reclaiming habits.........Kim

take a deep breath people... ahhhh, that's it.... obviously a touchy topic, which is perfect because i think the thrust of this initiative needs passion, but also common sense... i'm not exactly sure what the details of it are but the 'roots' of it are obvious...with dwindling budgets and staff ever splitting off in all directions with very minimal numbers of 'replacements', the age of the 100% armchair biologist is near...no techs no field staff, just old outdated information and hopefully some new stuff generated by some state in america or some other land... if this initiative is to manage the FEI funds then all it will be is a new comittee which may or may not work like the present one...hopefully it will be something more... i think if folks are going to worry about what group is in what or what group says what, they should bring these worries to whatever groups they are wondering about....FLIPPR , for example, is a regional (Parkland) group trying to improve the quality of life by developing, maintaining and promoting all kinds of fishing ops in the area, with an emphasis on large trout (C&R)... working closely with fisheries staff in the region they are well on their way, with alot of hard work to go...working with young folks has always been a part of it, so what happened , they brought in the specialists, the MFFA...FLIPPR is countless councillors and RMs, and businesses etc...so this one part of this initiative, this 'small' entity, covering all walks of life... then the SVSFE group based out of Swan River...more of the same...the list goes on and on... i think it is just a start to things and by the groups included a dam good start...i would hazard a guess and say that the persons representing each one of these groups are not at odds on any subject which would distract from the goals and objectives...i hope it steamrolls on from shoreline to riverbank from north to south and east to west...i got a positive feeling about this...

Ken, Thanks for the reply. I agree that what this needs is passion and common sense. I also think that it is important for us to voice our thoughts/concerns/feelings/views on these topics. I'll be the first one to say that if any of what I have said is in error "please point my errors out ". In this day of cutbacks ect. I do believe that the road to any kind of change will be grassroots. I may be in error but I've always seen change coming from the bottom up not from the top down. A truly open system would see a flow of ideas , of change ect. going both ways. There have been baby steps , which is encouraging. Let me say that I do agree that we ( not just ff's but all who sport fish) need to drive this fund , so I do hope that these group's do pull this off, I'm hoping that they will stay in touch with the concerns of the day and those who are sportfishing and not forget that they are representing those who are putting monies in for this by buying fishing Licences. I have heard said that once a idea is put out that it no longer belongs to the person , it belongs to the whole. Like Ken I hope this this goes from shoreline to riverbank, from north to south ,east to west. Lets keep talking and lets keep a co-operative spirit going. Geez I think I better stop before I start crying or something worse that isnt macho ........ Kim

Wow I didn't mean to shake the tree that hard. ;D When everything is said and done the lights still have to be on in the aerater shacks don't they. As I said before the grass roots money drives the rest of the funding. Heck I lose more than 25 bucks every time I play g*lf. ;D Rivers are made one drop at a time.

Just a thought...
I know some of the guys involved in the fisheries funding initiative. I'll talk to them and see if there is some summary material that we could post. There is evident interest - and passion - this group could lend support to the effort. From my understanding of things, it is getting close to the point where the angling community will have to start to demonstrate to government that this needs attention and action...TIM

Tim- please do keep us informed- if there is an avenue for grassroots input- email etc etc or.... I,m sure many of the folks here wont be shy:)
I know I,d love to see some attention paid to the Roseau River- I know studies have been done on the problems and possible solutions that effect and could be pursued on the Roseau- John- Caddisguy- would be able to articulate better the status of that process. While it contains and hopefully never will , no stocked trout- which may be the reason for its being largely ignored,, its a remarkable river habitat that deserves our attention for what it is , a great place to ply every river Fly Fishing practise ever conceived and presents all the challanges ,rewards and excitement of any NA trout stream fishing experience, amongst hatches of stonefly, mayfly, caddis for sporting species. Perhaps it could be an example that encourages Manitoba fly fishers to re-discover something thats being overlooked with the fixation on trout and deserves greater attention.
