I've fished the floodway outlet twice after the rain and higher water levels. On Saturday there was a pretty nice flow of water spilling over the barrier, so I decided to fish on the East side which had more current. In 2 hours I landed 4 cats, 37", 33", 30", 20." I tried that little cove next to the spillway which had turned into a back eddy and hooked into a carp, however after a couple of minutes it spat the hook. I have only started fishing the Red this year and I am frustrated with those carp. I have only landed 1 out of the 10 that I have hooked up with. I've been using the DDH Leech and Prince Nymph, are there any other flies that I should be trying? I'd like to try for more carp as well, what techniques or retrieves should I be using? I also went last evening, there was not any water flowing above the floodway, but there was still current coming from beneath it. I did not have any success in landing anything large, but I got a whole array of species including, white bass, goldeye, walleye, drum, catfish and another huge carp that got away.

I landed a 30.5" carp tonight. Was using a Bomber Bugger. Hybrid fly I came up with tied onto a wide gap worm hook. Worked great and is almost snag-free. I find you have to keep the tension on. If you give them any slack they'll shake it.
Also caught a small white bass, and a small drum. No cats. Lots of fish caught by other anglers.

Last night, I chucked an unweighted woolly bugger in front of a cruzing carp. He picked it up quickly, headed for deeper water, and SNAP.... Hook broke in half... not a surprise. That is what I get for fishing a STORE bought fly.... I'm kidding... not against buying flies... just make sure they have good hooks! Lost of carp in the spillway right now, also saw a few cats. but only hooked up with goldeye, sauger, and carp. Odd situation occured last night.... The Tale Of Three Casts. 1.) SNAG....lose my DDH Leech. 2.) SNAG.... catch my DDH leech right between the barbels. 3.) SNAG... lose me entire leader and 6" of fly line...... these three cast were consecutive.... needless to say, after re-rigging, I moved

If the carp are really numerous, and you keep losing them, it could be a sign they are foul-hooked.

As of yesterday a.m. the floodway was not moving at all. Algae everywhere so I fished the main river channel. I was using 8 lb. test for a leader and managed to hook into the biggest Cat of my life. Took me into the backing twice and I fought him back both times. Now I can guess at a Cat's length and be within 1 inch of the size and let me tell you this was one big Cat. Looking at it when it was only 10 feet away and on the surface I would say the length of this fish was 43-44 inches. It was a brute. Of course I thought of getting pictures before I landed it and every time I do that I loose the fish. Sure enough I put a bit of extra pressure on it and the leader broke, sounding like a gunshot. The line wrapped around my head and it felt like I lost the most gorgeous looking girl in the world. Lucky 'cause my wife is still married to me. Any way never ever use 8 lb. test on the Red. What a bummer.

was at the floodway erly last evening and the water was empty and only saw a short hatch at 7:30 that lasted a few minutes....during which 2 carp appeared sipping
quickly changed flies in time for the hatch to end and the carp went down if not out so I went home for dinner
should have followed Stu's lead and fished the locks

Hey Stu I was in the floodway last evening there was a good current flowing did not see any algae. Fishing was slow landed small sauger and faught something quite large for 3or4 minutes before it straightened the hook on my DDH Leach. Better luck next time.
